"Peter" (Cephas) was also not a man's name before that moment. It was a word, but not a name. When God changes someone's name, it's for an important reason.

Having grown up Protestant I hadn't heard the Catholic case for Peter as the first Pope so well articulated before.

Mentioned several times by the writers of the NT. Holy Father, they called him, correct?

Every disciple was given the keys. Jesus stops talking to Simon right after He renames him. The rest of the discussion is directed to the disciple, just as the conversation began.

Simon Peter the humble fisherman became the head of Christ's believers, but Jesus never gave him worldly power in the form of riches, possessions, lands, etc. On the contrary...the Church of Jesus the Christ was NEVER meant to be powerful and rich in a worldly sense. Just look how super rich the Vatican is, how the pope, cardinals, bishops etc. are dressed, in which houses and palaces they live, look at their lifestyle etc. We all know that the devil is the greatest deceiver and all you have to do is open your eyes and the truth will jump in your face.

You say that Jesus changed his name in Matthew 16
WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT? THAT’S INACCURATE

The “Galilean ministry” of Jesus begins when, after the
temptation of satan in the Judean desert, Jesus goes
back to Galilee. His first disciples encounter Him, begin to
travel with Him and THIS IS WHEN He CHANGES
Simons name to Peter. MINISTRY YEAR 1
(Matthew 4:18, Mark 3:16, Luke 6:14 and John 1:42)

Matthew 16 takes place in Caesarea Philippi during the
“Judean ministry” of Jesus. This is when Jesus starts His
FINAL journey to Jerusalem by going around Samaria,
through Perea and on through Judea to Jerusalem.
MINISTRY YEAR 3 (Matt 16:13, Mark 8:27, Luke 9:18)

@ 4:24 You claim: “Jesus only changes 1 guys name,
He DOESN’T change the other Apostles names”

WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT? THAT’S INACCURATE

Jesus Calls Levi, who’s name He changed to Matthew
Mark 2:13, Luke 5:27

What about James and John the sons of Zebedee
to whom HE GAVE THE NAME Boanerges?! Mark 3:17

2:02 is there actually a protestant that actually believes Mat. 16:18 refers to the rock being Jesus? Or are you saying that "the rock" in Mat. 16:18 is also "the conerstone" as mentioned in Mat. 21:42, Mar. 12:10, Luke 20:17, and Acts 4:11?

Jesus was an Essene Nazarene (a sect within the Essene's) and the Essene's were gnostic

You claim @ 6:40 that Jesus made Peter pope, head
of the church and INFALLIBLE in Matthew 16:18

Funny thing. The ONLY ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS
of a catholic pope, are ALL the accounts that follow!

But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind ME,
SATAN! You are a HINDRANCE to ME. For you are
NOT setting your mind on the things of God, but on
the things of man.” Matthew 16:23

Matthew 26:69 Peter Denies Jesus (as catholic pope)
Mark 14:66 Peter Denies Jesus (as catholic pope)
Luke 22:54 Peter Denies Jesus (as catholic pope)
John 18:15 Peter Denies Jesus (as catholic pope)
John 18:25 PETER DENIES JESUS AGAIN!!!

Peter was WEAK, A COWARD, DENIER and A LIAR
Matthew 26:35, Mark 14:29, Luke 22:43

UNTIL! 50 days after The Ascension of Christ Jesus!

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in
Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

ONLY THEN were Peter and the OTHER Apostles,
STRONG, BOLD, BRAVE and COURAGEOUS!

It is SO VERY TROUBLING when someone says:
JESUS IS HEAD and HE HAS ALL AUTHORITY.
Salvation is from God, He is the ONLY way to heaven
Jesus IS THE ONLY ONE WORTHY of our PRAISE.

CONSIDER IT FOR JUST ONE MINUTE. PLEASE!

Scripture STATES:
JESUS IS HEAD and HE HAS ALL AUTHORITY.

Matthew 28:18
And Jesus came and said to them, “ALL authority in
heaven and ON EARTH has been GIVEN TO ME.

Scripture STATES:

Romans 3:23
for ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

But catholics say NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!
The pope is the head and the church has authority.

Peter was never in Rome. Paul was. But never Peter. That’s Bible.

Thanks to both!! Brayan I don’t know if you May happen to heard some Protestants saying: “we started 3000 years ago and they mention Exodus 12 as a reference” 🤣😂

There's no record that Peter was ever the Bishop of Rome. There is no biblical or historical evidence for the claims of the Roman Catholic church that Peter was the first pope. In fact there is no evidence that there even was a pope in the first century.

Probably the most difficult part about the papacy for me is the history of popes that have scandalized Christian’s. If the papacy is true and they’re the “faithful shepherds” as Jeremiah prophecies, why are they leading so many people astray. This is especially true with the current pontiff that makes it seem like all roads lead to heaven to the average onlooker. He may not have taught any specific heresies, but he has clearly displayed his lack of concern for the souls of the world. He either doesn’t care, or is completely ignorant of their need for Christ. Neither one makes sense for what is supposed to be the spokesperson for the Christian religion.

When Jesus asked the Apostles, "Who do you say that I am?", Peter said: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
In physics this is called a "moment". At this exact precise moment, a son of Adam professes for the very first time in the history of the universe, his faith/belief in Jesus as the Son of God.
In response Jesus says: “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are "Petros", and upon this "Petra" I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Matthew 16:17‭-‬18

"...flesh and blood did not reveal "this" to you..."

The "this" in this phrase refers to Peter's confession of faith and is the "Petra" upon which the Church of Jesus Christ was to be built.
Isn't it obvious? It was to most of the "Church Fathers".
And it is to me.
I would here agree with the Church Fathers.

Augustine: "... but the rock was Christ..."
Jerome: "The rock is Christ"
Origin: "All Christians are the rock... insofar as they confess faith in Christ like Peter."
John Chrysostom: "... 'You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church', that is, on the faith of his confession."
Basil of Seluecia: "Now Christ called this confession a rock, and he named the one who confessed it 'Peter'..."
Ambrose: "... Faith, then, is the foundation of the Church, for it was not said of Peter's flesh, but of his faith, that 'the gates of hell shall not prevail against it...'".

"The Early Church was the Catholic Church" is such a great book. I've been highlighting and copying quotes from it nonstop. Tim Staples gave us a talk in Nebraska last week and it was so exciting because I'd already started to memorize some of the more powerful ones, like Justin Martyr's miniature description of the liturgy of the mass.
