In a 32-bit JVM, the memory consumption for an array like marks[3] is calculated as 3 references × 4 bytes = 12 bytes. On a 64-bit machine, to calculate how much memory marks3] consumes in bytes, it would be 3 references × 8 bytes = 24 bytes.
