In this indie horror game devlog, full time game dev Two Star Games (Gavin Eisenbeisz) shows how to make a video game that is incredibly scary, horrifying, cursed, and is probably the scariest game ever. I'll be programming artificial intelligence AI. See behind the scenes in Unreal Engine 4 Blender and Gimp, as I make this game. This horror game has an evil spider train. Like in resident evil, replaced Mr. X mod, or in skyrim and other popular best video games. Choo Choo Charles for life. Also, some people think the game is called Choo Choo Charlies, but that's incorrect.

For me, I feel like while having Charles chase you mindlessly is terrifying, I also feel like there should be some binoculars or a telescope in the game, possibly to see him from far away, doing... whatever else he does. Monsters in games I find the most interesting are those who have goals other than "Kill you, then...?". Charles seems unintelligent (not to be mean), so being him possibly doing more beastial activities would be interesting. Since he seems to be based on a spider, I thought it would be interesting for him to weave "false tracks" out of spidersilk that aren't on your map, that could lead to traps or little hidden areas. (fun fact, the tensile strength of spider silk can be stronger than steel, which is a terrifying thought. A massive web of train tracks, riding on the walls of a cave?) Little things like that keep it more replayable, since it adds to what this thing is, beyond a creature to kill.

adding more cultists, but also having them take damage from charles would make charles much more terrifying. like imagine 40 of the cultists running side by side with charles, but also having their heads smash into the ground by charles

The cultists should use more melee scary weapons like a chainsaw, a machete, axes, hammers even train signs and etc, and the protagonist should have some kind of gun or knife or maybe both, maybe the weapons should be slow to reload like reloading a revolver 1 bullet at time or being a 1 shot gun, the knife or axe for when you have no ammo.

A small concept I've had in mind for a while: There could be these small spider minions shaped like train whistles that roam around in random places on the map. Whenever you get too close to one of these spider whistles, they will toot loudly as a signal to Charles to let him know where you're located. These things will occasionally jump at your train while you're fleeing from Charles and are much faster compared to him. However, they only deal a very small percentage of the damage that Charles does, and they also take more damage from weapons.

(Please note that I thought of this idea before this video was released, so I was not yet aware of the spider cult one)

I am thinking about something that makes the game more "durable", players will get bored of just shooting Charles, but not killing him, and get nothing in reward. This builds up a negative feedback to players, which is super bad for the game cuz fighting Charles is literally one of the biggest part of the game. One of the most direct rewards is to give player collecetables after one fight is over, depending on how well the player defended. Another way is to reward exp or some sort of currency to player, exp could be used for unlocking weapon blueprints, new area, new missions, even new train upgrades. Currency could enable trades with other locals/survivers, hire gunners for what could be attacks of cultist hordes when exploring new areas (idea from Days Gone).

You should add some "missions" like this, where you need to kill "cultists" and infiltrate "cultist camps", by being stealthy, or by wearing a "cultist mask" (you can find it on dead "cultists" you killed, and you need to put it to not being spotted by the "cultists"). These missions are to get some special stuff, like the overpowered mass-destruction weapons like the rocket launcher or the flamethrower.

1:12 Not gonna lie, I thought the foreshadowing was you starting a civil war within the cult as you improve your train and start convincing some cultists that yours is the mightier engine.

Idea: If the player gets more and more notorious with the cult (Killing, them, Stealing from them, or hurting Charles) they may actively try to hunt the player.
Example: They put a road block over the track, the player needs to leave their train to clear the track. You would need to kill the cultist's and remove the block. The cultists could even set something up like a train whistle to try and attract Charles to kill the player so that sets a sort of time limit making the situation more stressful.

Not really a horror fan, probably won't interact with this game beyond watching Markiplier stumble through it. But still, mad props to you for being able to make a game like this by yourself. I didn't think solo developers could

Maybe the cultists could say or shout stuff like "The Cycle must remain in motion!" Or maybe "more meat for for the Great One!"

Put "cultist camps" around the map, and have certain ones where you can find special upgrade to the train or weapons. Or hell add some notes and stuff to deepen the lore.

you should definitely add reverb to the player's steps once theyre in the mine, i think it would add to the vibe and realism. Plus you should absolutely add more obstacles and passages to the mine, make it a real dangerous and mysterious risk for the player as well as give more exploration to that otherwise small section of the game, ooo ooo and likely add unique loot or additions for train that you cant really get elsewhere in the more difficult sections of the mine

Dude, a little tip: with the amount of damage the shotgun does, the enemy is less scary and kinda underwhelming. Kinda broke the tension of the chase when you got shot multiple times and it barely did anything to you
