Greetings from Ukraine. They do not stand in the fields. There are mobile air defense groups on pickup trucks. They have contact with people on radars, which tell them about the direction of movement of the object. At first, such groups appeared near the front line. Now, obviously, there are groups in strategic directions. I apologize for my English. I hope you understood what I meant.

As someone that has received Stinger training, I can 100% confirm that low-flying targets are WAY easier to track and fire than high flying aircraft. I can't tell you if their jet engines produce enough heat to be picked up by an Igla but if the Stinger can track a small helicopter's turbofan engine, it can track a cruise missile's jet engine.

"Why were they standing out in a field with a manpad." GR collectively forgot that radio exists for a bit there, huh?

"Nobody just stands in a field with an Igla"
In Ukraine this year they actually do that all the time. In many videos of anti-tank teams working you'll see a guy standing in the field with a man pad looking for helicopters or other aerial threats that might be targeting the anti-tank team. Also these cruise missile attacks weren't just one missile per region. They were saturation attacks so this man pad team may very well have seen a missile or more fly through the area seconds or minutes prior, and decided to get ready in case more were coming.

In 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Strela and Igla systems were used against cruise missiles and UAVs with nearly 100% success rate. The only problem was, as smb stated in your video, being in the right place at the right time... With actual combat units being dispersed all over the place in small numbers, that was easier to achieve. There are reports of two Tomahawk missiles being shot down by an infantry unit using PKM light machine guns. And all kinds of AAA were working, too.
However, it is worth mentioning that the territory being defended was way smaller and mountainous, which made the approach of these somewhat more predictable. Plus, Yugoslav army used a very weird "early warning system" called "visual observation stations". Basically, a bunch of guys were placed in hundreds of positions, in a web. When they would see or hear smth, they would report to their center giving their best estimate to what it is. So, when at least 2 observation posts would report on something and direction, you could do a triangulation and know the rough position of the threat. Despite many being skeptical about this, it worked to an extent.
Also, it is worth mentioning that the technology advanced somewhat since 1999. But these things still don't flare or maneuver when a missile launch is detected...

The Logic of Hassina and the ingenuity of ramp launched IRIS-T was very enjoyable.
Violent Moon is fast becoming a legend in her own lunchtime.
Long may it continue.

If you listen to the background you can hear a anti aircraft gun or SPAAG.
I think it could be a Gepard that helped them with early warning because the guns sound like 35mm Oerlikon.

A Wiesel/Ozelot would be handy for stuff like this.
the IRST search sensor would help establishing direction.

They weren't just "standing in a field", they were MANPAD deployed with a GEPARD (which you can hear firing at the beginning of the video), which itself would have given them early warning and directional data

That in the background sounds like a ZSU-23, maybe you were able to detect the missiles early enough with their radar?
But it could also be Ivan with a machine gun on a pickup truck... idk

"Just get in the man, and just dont do anything wierd" - Sock almost killed me as well with that suicide. You guys are comedy gold at times!

Not only do you bring us great information but you do it with such panache. It's utterly brilliant and tremendously fun. Also, completely insane but that's why we love the Grim Reapers. Keep having fun.

Here the thing there so many MANPAD scatter around this country and as long as you have good communications and a head up this is very possible. The fact you see another missile shoot at and miss makes me think it very possible.

Counterpoint cap: a smaller engine yes, but, also a VASTLY smaller airframe! That means that there's less thermal mass to absorb and/or block the IR signature, thus a smaller engine could very well be HOTTER than a larger one!

Sometimes low tech early warning can be really effective.
It was kids on a hill with a cell phone that warned Mogadishu that the rangers were coming.

The Manpads are designed to down fighters flying low, those big cruise missiles are bigger than the target drones they are practiced on. The main issue is early warning radar and fast information, if they are found then it's easy because the missile doesn't maneuver and goes in a straight line

Yeah, they undoubtedly have early warning capability as they often sound air raid sirens long before the missiles hit, therefore they know the flight path of the missiles - assuming they haven't been programmed with a dogleg or similar. If you then have a team in the right place it does look like its possible. Like Cap I was dubious and thought it may just be a drone that they took down and The Sun called it a cruise missile (they're not exactly known for Journalistic quality). Good job again the GR, the take offs at the end here hilarious!

Is there a simulation vehicle for the Rheinmetall Oerlikon Millennium Gun (GDM-008) and the flak shells? bad day in the air next to that.

Or maybe it was just some newer manpad? For example, the Polish PPZR Piorun (thunderbolt)?
