What's happening to American democracy?

With a populist billionaire demagogue winning support on the right, a self-declared socialist confounding US historical prejudices on the left and millions of disenchanted voters apparently determined to disregard the political establishment in Washington, the nomination race for this year's presidential poll has become one of the most peculiar and polarised electoral contests in decades.

In a two-part special report for People & Power, Bob Abeshouse set off in search of an explanation.

Us democracy isnt real democracy - Australia has compulsory voting - which ensures all have agency!! - which is closer to real democracy - after all the goal is to get a representative vote - to ensure the elected government has a real mandate!! - Why have electoral colleges - do they really make the system fairer?? US has a senate which acts as the check on lower houses power - what purpose do the electoral colleges serve?? -Why do some states not have postal votes ?? - why is the election still held on a Tuesday?? - shouldnt it be over the weekend - from say 6am sat to 9pm Sunday ensuring all who want to vote can?? -Think us polity needs to examine itself - come on USA you can do better!!!
