George Walker 2014 MFP Fellow
Final Presentation 2015 NBCC Foundation Awards and Orientation Ceremony Raleigh North Carolina
Experiential Objective: I would like to develop a strong relationship with my Mentor in order to help guide me in my dissertation and with at least one publishable, peer-reviewed study. I would also like to gain increased multicultural awareness, knowledge, experience and expertise, with an emphasis on social justice as a core component. Finally, I would like to participate in the policy initiatives and debates surrounding the mental health needs of African-American, adolescent males in the South Florida (Miami-Dade) region.
Impact Objective: I would like to present at the state and possibly the national counseling conventions. Specifically, the proposed workshop presentations would focus on: 1) Systemic barriers facing African-American males released from incarceration and 2) the impact of long-term addiction on the family - particularly the dynamics of re-establishing family connections after long-term absence due to addiction. I would also like to participate in developing a webinar, which focuses on counseling Islamic individuals and/or families. Ultimately (within the next year), I hope to submit a publishable study on at least one of the aforementioned (1 & 2) subject areas.
