Think about it. looking into the squares, James stares right into nine abyssal misfortunes of human existence. But he also stares into the player.
The abyss is you. A collection of human misfortunes.
Staring right back into him.

I have heard before that the reason of the 9 red squares is that the gap between them represents the bars of a prison window. The place where James belongs.

This is making me think, James realized what all the monsters represent and vice versa. That's why they don't attack you at the end and why James looks away at the 9 squares ashamedly
