Hey guys, in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to use the new animation retargeting system in Unreal Engine 5. This is using the IK rigs and retargeting. The example in this video is using a Mixamo character and animation, however this will work for any character, skeleton, and animation you want to use.

Thank you!! Just spent 2 hours trying to figure out why my character was flying around instead of copying the animation. You pointed out that the pelvis had to be used as the root in the IK Rig and that fixed it! Thanks again!

Great video! A faster way to do the chains is to select the bones in the Hierarchy and then click the Add New Chain Button and the retargeter will name the chain and detect the starting and ending bones automatically. Just make sure you don't select the Twist bones. For fingers it will create one chain per finger. Also, it will pause for a few seconds when you do longer chains. Don't worry, it's still working. Takes about 10 - 20 seconds tops.

This worked! Way better than downloading a certain bloatware app for my PC. With this, everything will work just fine!

Excellent tutorial, your tip where you said smth about choosing the pelvis as root bone probably saved me hours of being confused!

Quick tip, if you are using ue4 or ue5 skeleton structure: you can also duplicate the ik retargeter inside Third person template and use it on your skeleton. For mixamo, you have to create your own but you could still duplicate and use it just changing the bones names from mixamo. Makes it way faster and easier to do this way.

I was watching another video on the basics of creating animation chains in Unreal as a beginner, until I wasn't able to retarget the old way and found your video, which has been very clear and easy to follow, so thanks. But now my mesh will not select to move for adjusting the pose using "edit pose". I'm super new to the engine and have no idea where to even start looking for troubleshooting.

Thank you for this really clear tutorial I finally understand more what I'm doing because of this instead of blindly following I could actually go off on my own and do a Daz character to Mixamo. Thank you so much!! Although she looks a little janky in the arms I think it has to do with Daz's "twist" thing in the arms and legs will have to run off and troubleshoot that. So happy been at this for months honestly lol
