It looks like it gets in between the phospholipid bilayer due to its hydrophobic property, which disrupts the protein pumps and other proteins that rely on an intact membrane. Note that bacteria have a cell wall(made of peptidoglycan), but it could still seep through since it's not entirely solid. Calling it now with an educated guess.
