Asia Pacific: Snapshot of Malaria in 2021
According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2022
2021 was a year marked by global challenges. Yet nations around the world largely held the line against malaria. The Greater Mekong Subregion continued progress towards eliminating malaria. The Western Pacific region reversed their upward trend from 2020.
However, we cannot be complacent. Malaria cases in South-East Asia increased by 8% in 2021. P. Vivax, a strain of malaria that is difficult to detect and treat, has long been a concern but is now on the rise in parts of the region. Continued environmental challenges and political instability may put the region at risk of a future surge in malaria cases.
Asia Pacific is at the last mile. To eliminate malaria by 2030, we must stay vigilant and double our efforts to end this deadly disease.
