Charcoal Quick Sketch - Sculpting Form

Drawing can often be a lot like sculpting, a process of gradually sneaking up on form. I think this sketch is a good example of that process and how I tend to think about it when I'm drawing. This was about a 30 minute sketch in real time, shown here as a slight time-lapse in the interest of brevity. Leave a comment before you go! If you have any questions, just leave them below and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

This sketch is done with Nitram charcoal, which I haven’t used much in the past. It’s made through a process and it’s slightly different from vine or willow charcoal although it’s very similar to willow. It’s growing on me.

Hello Jeff! How long does it usually takes you to draw these portraits?

Do you wipe the stump off with each charcoal pickup? Or does it stay pretty absorbent?
