What Makes A Track Good in F1?

F1 tracks are boring (at least most of them are). So what makes the good ones great? And which tracks should you consider attending in-person?

All this (and much more) discussed in this video!

One more thing that makes circuits such as Interlagos, Spa and Suzuka exciting is the high chance of changing weather conditions.

I think elevation change is also something that makes things so much more fun and intresting

maybe just my opinion but elevation also is a big upgrade to many tracks (interlagos, spa, nurburg ring ... ) or the bankings in Zanvoort. Great Vid!

Honestly way better than I expected from someone with your sub count. Super underrated, can't wait to see where you'll be in 6 months.

RedBull Ring is a worthy mention. I haven't seen a dull Grand Prix there in the last 3 years.

If u ask me, Zandvoort, Silverstone, Bahrain, Hockenheim and Brazil are/were the greatest tracks for racing. Never a dull race and there’s always overtakes/ controversy. Would love to see Hockenheim back on the calendar, great circuit

I say all this before watching:

1) A wide variety of lines that can be utilized in varying scenarios at multiple areas of the track
2) Curves that allow cars to "get wiggly" at speed when racing
3) Turn 1 chaos
4) Elevation/grade change
5) Unique corners that present a challenge drivers won't see on most tracks (think the Zandvoort banking or cota t1)

Some less controllable variables:

6) Proximity to unpredictable or changeable weather conditions
7) Car size. Bigger reduce the amount of turns that can be interesting
8) Pirelli's not being ass
9) Championship stakes. Part of the Interlagos magic is that it historically has been a key WDC and WCC race where people make or break a season. A return of the older points scoring format would aid this, as every race becomes important.

They could "upgrade" so many circuits with these ideas, like they could make the straight in Hungary a bit longer, and make turn 1 sharper, and making the middle sector slightly wider

I finally went to an F1 race last year when I went to Monza. Now it probably helps that I’m a Ferrari fan, but it was the coolest experience of my life. The actual experience of watching the race isn’t as good as on TV, but the atmosphere is completely unbeatable. You gotta go to one at some point as a fan, it’s worth it.

This year I’m going to COTA, already got my tickets, and it’s my new goal to go to at least one race a year. Planning on Canada next year.

Fair point. If you want exciting racing at most of these current F1 race circuits, you're going to have to make the cars smaller and lighter, like they were during the 2009-2016 seasons.

4:23 thata true ! I always loved the China GP . That huge long straight, the long corners that never end ... so great to drive on and battle ! One of the few tracks where actually can battle the new cars

i love the video, keep the hard work up. personally i think that one of the main problems with f1 and its tracks getting boring is the money aspect. in todays f1 it´s always about the money that’s why amazing tracks like turkey, germanys hockenheimring and many others aren’t on the calendar anymore.

How do you only have 749 subscribers? Such high quality content!

I think you've done a great job with this video, but perhaps when looking at those three main actors like Interlagos, Spa and Monza, also mentioning Silverstone, maybe Suzuka would be very good to include in this as well. The racing in itself does suffer a bit due to the many sweeping bends, but I guess that is a whole category in itself. Looking at tracks that basically get all the satisfaction (viewer and driver alike) on Saturdays could be another one to look at. Being a Seb fan all the time I watched F1, I have always seen Suzuka as my one favourite track in F1!
