I would argue that its the opposite. As someone who has played the Splatana Wiper since the game came out, its playstyle is actually most similar to the Tetra Dualies.
You dont want to be the "unseen assassin", thats a Roller's job. If you're gonna play the Wiper in the same way as you would play with a Roller, itll just be a worse Roller.
Instead, what you want to do is use the Wiper's extreme mobility and survivability to be a distraction. The kit plays into this too.
The Torpedo allows you to force opponents to stop what theyre doing and shoot down the Torpedo, and Ultra Stamp forces the opponents to direct their attention and spend resources to deal with you.
You want to be as aggressive as possible, constantly harassing the enemy team with Torpedoes and your main attacks, forcing them to constantly have to deal with you, and directing their attention towards yourself, giving your team opportunities to push forward while the enemies are busy trying to take you down.

Wiper's combination of high mobility and survivability makes it excellent at this role. Its damage is relatively tame, but not low enough to where you can ignore it.
The best way I'd describe the playstyle is the "Annoying Mosquito". Quick, evasive, and difficult to get rid of, constantly harassing your team and forcing you to direct your attention and resources on them.
As for gear, i recommend a lot of quick respawn, and preferably Comeback and special saver, with at least one sub of quick super jump. And dont forget your Stealth Jump. Wiper's dash attack can also be useful at protecting your landing, similar to the Tetra Dualies dodge rolls.
Basically the same as what a Tetra Dualie would use.

Splatanas are the yin to inkbrush's yang. Play brushes next, and you could add an extra layer by having to crush someone with each brush before you can move on.

18:28 they did that with Dapple Dualies too, and toothbrushes genuinely are used in painting to make splatter marks known as "dapples"

Fun fact.
Before splat 3 got announced i made splatoon weapon concepts.
One of them was a bubblewand whoch worked like a sword. You swong it around to create wide sword beams while holding it but if you tap it you will do rapid slashes which quickly take out an opponent.
The concept was very similar to the splatana which made me VERY HYPED when splatanas got announced.
Because they basically made my oc weapon real
