Fractal Epistemology with Terry Marks-Tarlow

Terry Marks-Tarlow, PhD, is a clinical psychologist. She is author of Mirrors of the Mind: Psychotherapist as Artist; Clinical Intuition in Psychotherapy; Awakening Clinical Intuition; Psyche's Veil: Psychotherapy, Fractals, and Complexity; and Creativity Inside Out. She is coeditor of two anthologies – Simultaneity: Temporal Structures and Observer Perspectives; and A Fractal Epistemology for a Scientific Psychology.

Here she describes fractal mathematics as providing a new vision of the universe with broad implications for every field of science. In particular, she offers suggestions as to how fractal patterning could resolve the dilemma as to whether Jungian synchronicities can be viewed as truly "acausal." She provides illustrations of the many ways in which fractal patterns can be found in nature and, especially, in the human body. She describes fractal boundaries as occuring between normal dimensions of existence.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is also the 1st Prize winner of the 2021 Bigelow Institute essay competition regarding the best evidence for survival of human consciousness after permanent bodily death.

Here is a conversation that reaches us all, from both the remarkable Dr. Terry Marks-Tarlow and the engaged and highly informed interviewer, Dr. Mishlove. Here is a topic, as Dr. Terry says, that we will ALL need to know in the near future to be scientifically literate. But this is beautiful, fun, transformative, and raises and answers many life questions. The self-similarity of fractals (and their delightful preference to go to infinity!) is not some odd-ball thing. Here are our clouds and trees, our coastlines, arteries and veins, our brains. And at all levels. From the cloud out the window to an immense nebula in space? Does it matter? Here is a "family resemblance" within and without time and space that unites us all in a much greater mystery. But these folks make it clear, simple, beautiful, and inspiring. Don't miss this video. GREAT JOB

Brilliant interview, hoping for a second part with Terry dear Jeffrey. Fractals as the lens to reality is indeed a fascinating and growing topic 👍

Having been wanting a clearer explanation of fractals from TMT, was just now writing about synchronicity, turn on YouTube and here it is. A great end to an alright day. Thank you

Congratulations Mr Mishlove on your recent prize from Bob Bigelow. Can't wait to read your essay.

When I discovered Emanuel Swedenborg, one of the things that made me believe in his stuff is the presence of fractals in his descriptions of spiritual world. It's twofold:
On one hand, he says that the whole of Heaven is structured as one human being. It literally (functionally, if not necessarily visually) has a head, arms, legs, etc. including all organs, blood vessels, skin etc. At the same time, Heaven consists of inumerous angelic societies, which in turn are also shaped/organized as human beings (ie. angels), with all the mentioned detailed characteristics. The societies, of course, consist of angels themselves, which in turn are also human beings. That's fractal self-similarity 101.
On the other hand, he talks of some "heavenly form" that permeates everything, by which all communication travels in Heaven; and then when he talks of heavenly writing (alphabet) he says it consists mostly of curves and spirals that remind of this heavenly form - which reminds me much of how fractals (eg. Mandelbrot and Julia sets) look.
But the aforementioned self-similarity of the Heaven as a whole, through angelic societies, down to particular angels, imho is fractals 2-3 centuries before anyone else ever came with such a concept (he lived in 1700-ies)

Great interview! It made me think about much clearer the fractals of nature. Also, are there any upcoming or stowed away interviews with Dr. Gayle Delaney? Stay well!

I quite like this description:
“The Mandelbrot Set is a geography of iterative stability.”

Once I watched a longish Mandelbrot zoom on YT, and I calculated the speed at which it "grows" and the resulting (calculated) size of the initial (zoomed-out) outer Mandel shape, and eventually - even relatively soon, considering - it "became" thousands of times larger than the known universe 👍

Thanks for that.
( 9:55 : "More neurons in the brain than molecules in the universe"..I guess she meant "than stars in the universe" )

How can there be more connections in a brain than molecules in the universe? Seems illogical to me. Enjoying the conversation regardless.

at 24min in Terry points out a differencxe between fractal and hologram... she has missed the point. holograms are the same.. the same of all.. and all contains all possibilites hence its not a dead copy ...as she implies

28:41 So set theory is now taught in "elementary school"? 😂 I think you meant basic math courses at the college level, but thanks for laugh.

You can't even say his name correctly. "Mandelbrot" ( Man-Del- Brot ) How hard is that?
