John Truby is a true legend. I'm reading Anatomy of Story right now and his understanding of storytelling is immense.

I too have learned more from Truby than any schooling. Life is the best teacher and building a character from a true hero or corrupt individual to me is the best foundation. All my characters have elements from someone I know and built upon those I dont. My favorite teacher always said your best characterization are those who say some thing but what they don't say is the most important.

One of the most important short videos on storytelling!

The way I view it is like the main character is like a... Let's say rod of metal. As more character interactions are added, the pole bends and turns. You don't want to make the pole a tangled mess (unless that's the internal conflict for your character, in which case have fun) but you want it to have that level of complexity that's made your character seem like a real person.

I love that you alluded to the fact that Hollywood writes by committee, a sign of all great art. I hope you're very rich. I hope someday you realize you have more money than you can possibly ever spend. I hope someday you will look back and see what you've done. I hope you have enough time to overcome your character weakness.

Another good example of what he’s talking about: Ripley in Aliens (1986). Wonderfully written character arch

Internal weakness is definitely a way to keep your audience interested. We love flawed characters.

the power of the hero has made such an impression on people over their lifetimes because they admire their ability to overcome the odds and succeed- it totally eclipses the fact that they had to overcome inner obstacles in the process. All we're left with is the sense that 'Hero's Win because they're Stronger and Better Than Average'. The average moviegoer is left with this admiration without understanding why they feel that way.

What about you can give a hero certain obstacles that shows like forgiveness of him or herself in being wise individual and developing a self esteem attitude of pride and apathy of no real circumstances

I can't help but think of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 with the character description of this video.

It confuses me why people still ask this question. Character is everything.

Quite right! If I don't care about the character's weakness, why would I care about what kind of pizza is his favorite.

One question. In the past video, you said that the goal is motivated by the weakness, and thus the overcoming of the weakness is the same than the goal. Then, how can overcoming the weakness be more important than the goal?
For example, I have a character whose weakness is that he lost his memory and he doesn't remember who he is. He is tormented by that, and the goal, the long-term goal, is to find out who he is. In this case, to overcome the weakness is the same than to achieve the goal, isn't it?

Writing a book. Accidentally did exactly as you said

It sounds like it is character change that most people like. But we still like strong characters too.
