For future reference they make a special file to sharpen auger bits. It has safe edges so you dont file into the wings. And always file the bevel not the bottom.

I liked the way the the evapo rust worked on the auger bits, I just purchased 37 bits for next to nothing and was wondering on how to clean them and you had the right idea. Thanks for the help.

Rather than adapt the bits buy yourself a brace, it’s a great tool to use and it’s very quickly become one of my favourites. I still use my drill press but between my brace and bits and egg beater drill I rarely use my electric hand drills. When sharpening them always sharpen from underneath inside so you don’t impact on the size of the cut. The most important part to clean is the thread as that leads the bit into the wood and it’s that bit that really needs to be tip top.

The best way of cleaning the thread is to drill a little hole in some wood, about 1/8”, put some compound into the hole (paste is better than a block) and screw the thread in and out refilling the hole as needed.

Now about this "...taking old things and giving them new life...", how do I apply to be considered for this much needed new life?

Another great video, it gladdens my heart when younger people care about the world around them and what went before.

Great vid! After a quick stroll thru your lists I subbed.

I have a similar set of bits I'm about to clean and sharpen. I'm going to see about getting someone to sew me a new case if I can't find one online, or I may make one out of leather down the road.

I have used vinegar to clean lots of tools. Cleaning vinegar is stronger than the cooking stuff, cheap, and available in the grocery store cleaning isle. Agricultural vinegar is stronger also. I have not priced it, but it might be the way to go if you use a lot. Any of it is so cheap I'm not sure why you'd use a more expensive product. I've used Naval Jelly and it didn't seem to work any better than vinegar. I'm open to learning though.

Not long ago, I found a dozen American made files at an estate sale for a $1 each. They were rusty but still in great shape. I soaked them in vinegar over night and then used the power washer to clean out the grooves. Since I was doing 12, I took a 4x4 inch section of scrap wood and added ends to keep it from turning over. It looked like the letter H with a vey fat cross bar. Then I drilled holes in the 4x4 about 2 inches apart. The file handles fit upright in the holes and kept the files from moving while I power washed them. I cleaned up the files where needed with a sturdy needle and then a file card. Then oiled them.

On round items, like auger bits, I put them in a drill and turn them slowly. I found that my brass brushes leave a brass film on the item. Drill bits are harder than stainless steel, so I use cheap stainless brushes, then steel wool or Scotch Bright pads. Norton makes a pad that is more aggressive than Scotch Bright if you need it.

I have a Harbor Freight ultra sonic cleaner, but the vinegar seems to work better on rust. The ultra sonic cleanser really does a nice job of cleaning up plastic handles though.

Just as an interesting note, you can use white vinegar instead of the Evapo-Rust, it will produce the same result (and it probaby the active ingredient in the rust remover). Doesn't hurt that you an pick it up at the local grocery store and it's dirt cheap.

What is the best way to dispose of the evapo-rust once it is used up?

You use Evapo-rust wrong (2-days) and thats why they turned black. Use than than 12 hours (in instructions) and wire brush for a shinny steel look.
