World braces for US trade war escalation | BBC News

Stock markets have fallen in Asia and Europe after US President Donald Trump suggested that new tariffs he is set to announce this week will hit all countries, not just those that have the biggest trade imbalances with the US.

Trump made the comments in preparation to unveil a massive slate of import taxes on Wednesday, in what he has called America's "Liberation Day".

The measures will come on top of tariffs already imposed by Washington on aluminium, steel and vehicles, along with increased levies on all goods from China.

With 48 hours to go before the tariffs come into force, the UK is still locked in talks with the US about an exemption.

Europeans don't buy US cars, not because of the price point - but because they are shit cars. That won't change with tariffs, in fact it'll only make it more expensive for americans to buy quality products, while europeans, canadians, chinese etc. are going to realign their trade focus towards eachother and leave the US at the side of the road.

Now this is going to be a problem for the US. The US state debt is 131% of gdp, when/if the US dollar loses its status as a reserve currency, the interests for US national debts are going to skyrocket, and it'll be passed on to the US taxpayers. And just a friendly reminder - Greek had to be bailed out when their debts reached 148% of gdp, which will happen for the US around 2030 unless Trumps taxcuts are implemented (in which case it'll happen sooner). And no - the EU will be bailing out the US, it neither has the economy for it, nor the political capital vis a vis european voters to justify it.
