When I think of Godard, I think of that wonderful long tracking shot of traffic from hell in Weekend.

Thank you for this top 10. These past days, listening to a films selection by Michel Hazanavicious (The artist, 2011), he was mentioning the style of Godard got more political and obscure after «Weekend» (1967) (he also mentioned how Godard was difficult with his actors on this film). Apart from «Prénom Carmen» (1983) your list tends to show that his best films were mainly done in the 60s. And most films cited in the media, since Godard passed away, are referring to this period. Jean-Luc is one of those director that either you love or hate.

Great list! Le Petit Soldat & Tou Va Bein would have to find a spot in my top 10. “Pierrot Le Fou” is also my #1, if only for the finale where JPB wraps his head in dynamite.. A fitting fairwell film to his ex wife & star AK

I think Notre Musique is one of his most accessible films and had me more emotionally invested in the characters than any other Godard film I've ever seen. Being a meditation on war and how it is viewed from various perspectives I found it very moving. I found Hail Mary to be one of his funniest films.

Ridiculous. La Chinoise is one of the greatest films by anyone and Two or Three Things I Know About Her - if only for the close up espresso/spiral galaxy scene alone - should be here.

As in your ranking there is Prenom Carmen (in 10), I deduce that the list shouldn't only include "New Wave" movies. I have seen many Godard movies but not all of them. I haven't seen "Adieu au langage" for instance. My knowledge is therefore not complete. Here is my top 10 I don't know the titles in English, so I give them in French.

1- Sauve qui peut la vie.

2 - Pierrot le fou

3 - Prénom Carmen

4 - Passion

5 - Film Socialisme

6 - Je vous salue Marie

7 - Le mépris

8 - La chinoise

9 - Détective

10- Masculin féminin

Very difficult to find the 9 and 10. Others could have taken the place.

As you can see I don't think the "New Wave" movies are any better than the new ones.

It will seem curious to many that "A bout de souffle" shouldn't be quoted. Well, I think it's an overrated movie.
