Lesson 6: Struggling with All Energy
Outlined by: Pastor Abraham M. del Rosario
Memory Text: “To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.” (Col. 1:29, NIV)
Struggle – means to agonize. So, we have the word picture of an athlete straining with everything to win. Paul is striving to prevail with God’s power and surrender to God’s will. Human and Divine efforts are an equal success.
Read: Col. 1:28
Outline:
Striving with . . .
Candor (truth) John 16:5-15
God has unlimited resources of provision and power to transform us. Thus, the Holy Spirit can bring us the truth about our sinfulness and show us the greatest truth about God. He cannot make us repent nor force us to believe or obey.
Works of the Holy Spirit:
Coworker (John 16:7, helper)
Comfort (John 16:8)
Convict (John 16:8, sin or righteousness)
Read: John 16:13
Example: Satan’s rebellion and Adam and Eve's disobedience
Lesson: Sometimes, the crucible is there precisely because we have not obeyed or repented of our sins.
Choice
One of the greatest enemies of our wills is our feelings. Our emotions such anger, fear, and lust.
Choices based on feelings rather than on God’s word:
The lust of the eyes (Gen. 3:6, Eve)
The lust of the flesh (2 Sam. 11:2-4, David)
Hypocrisy (Gal. 2:11,12)
Read: 1 Pet. 1:13
Lesson: Peter understood that the mind is the rudder for the body that we take control of. Choices should be based on the word of God, not on feeling, emotion, and desire.
Commitment (Matt. 5:29, 30)
Radical action is made because of sexual sin and other sin.
Jesus is calling us to . . .
To control our minds
To control our bodies
To make a radical commitment to give up something
Example (Jacob)
He wrestled with God (Gen 32)
He persevered
He was blessed
Lesson: The more often we make the right choices, the stronger we will become, and the weaker the power of temptation in our lives. The crucible may be God’s call for us to make a radical decision to return to our Father’s plan for us.
