When a Jury Duty Scheme Backfires...

James Marsden tried to leverage his fame to get out of jury duty. The theory was that his celebrity would constitute a distraction and disrupt the trial, so he hired paparazzi to cause chaos. Not only did the plan not work, but it ended up showing everyone how ridiculous and onerous sequestration can be for jurors who are locked in to performing their civic duties. When we think of what makes a trial fair, how often do we consider the fairness of locking away innocent jurors?

I wouldn't have a problem with this... IF THE JURORS WERE PROPERLY COMPENSATED. No joke, in NJ where I live, it's $5 A DAY for the first 10 days, then $40 a day everyday after that!

The biggest issue with jury duty is that the compensation is a joke. If its only a day or two, then its not so bad, but if it stretches out to a week or more, then that can easily become a death sentence because you arent making nearly as much money as you were before and just because your job cant fire you for jury duty doesnt mean that your bills stop being due.

I love that the gloves fit OJ perfectly but he awkwardly flails and shrugs as if saying “sorry, i tried my best but they just don’t fit”

For anyone confused, this is for a TV prank show called Jury Duty where they pranked one guy by acting out an entire fake trial full of comedic characters and ridiculous situations. James Marsden was one of the jurors on this show, and he was in on the prank.

Which is why I toss jury summons in the trash. I can't afford to lose one day of work much less weeks or months.

Solution, have a compensation close to what a person makes of daily salary. If the person is a freelancer, 5% of what that person made in the best month of the latest semester.

If you don't want to do jury duty, just ask the lawyer about juror nullification

Every day I would walk in the court room and loudly say, after this I could give a shit about the law someone and idc who is going to prison til they let me go and that would start on day 2 or 3 let alone what I'd be doing by day 200

The look on OJ’s face is the look of someone that got away with some shit.

And you don't even get supplemental income if you're a juror in a very long trial. You barely even get a per diem that would cover one fast food meal, and you're lucky to have a hotel room. A lot of them are motels because they're cheaper

what if on day 1 the jury all stood and said "we the jury find the defendent not guilty" in response to sequestration

Whaaathuuu

265 days.
I mentioned this to my mom who already knew about this and according to her a lot of them had their lives absolutely fall apart.
Makes sense try keeping even your job after a 9-month absence.
I stand by the human rights are clearly abused in the court system even if you're not the guilty party.
Not just this but it's also screwed up that they're able to force people to testify and thanks to contempt of court the judge can basically sentence anyone for any amount of time (within limits) for any reason.

So messed up.

At that point i wold be asking to be taken off the case as that would trigger my anxiety and interfere with my ability to be objective

Imagine living off of minimum wage paying rent, and all of a sudden, you're told to get paid a fraction of that AND somehow pay rent. Juror duty is a death trap for lower income families.

Fyi if you ever want to get out of jury duty, just tell them youre going to vote guilty no matter what during the interview

Just tell the judge you appreciate the hard work of the prosecution and can't wait till the defendant is proven guilty.

Jury duty should be optional. Not mandatory

You should be compensated your usual pay for jury duty
