The space gun was shown so sporadic, I kept thinking that it only exists in the kids imagination. He looked so powerless over most of the entire runtime, so I could see him developing fantasies of omnipotence to overcome his obstacles. When the purpose of the gun was revealed, I couldn't believe that nobody gave the writers a note to change it into something that's more in the tone of the rest of the story. It felt like if the movie was invaded and taken over by another storyline from another script.
