Pese a su neutralidad y a que aún mantenía relaciones diplomáticas con los países del Eje, varios barcos argentinos fueron atacados por los U- boat de la Alemania nazi. El primer ataque se produjo en mayo de 1940, durante la Batalla de Francia, frente a las costas españolas. Allí fue hundido el “Uruguay”. Más tarde, en abril de 1942, al este de Estados Unidos, el petrolero “Victoria” fue atacado por un submarino alemán, aunque la nave argentina consiguió llegar a Nueva York. Por último, en junio de ese año, el mercante “Río Tercero” fue hundido lo que causó un gran escandalo social y político en Argentina. Sin embargo, en los tres casos el Reich alemán ofreció explicaciones e indemnizaciones y los gobiernos argentinos optaron por no romper las relaciones diplomáticas.

Despite its neutrality and the fact that it still maintained diplomatic relations with the Axis countries, several Argentine ships were attacked by U-boats from Nazi Germany. The first attack occurred in May 1940, during the Battle of France, off the Spanish coast. There the "Uruguay" was sunk. Later, in April 1942, in the eastern United States, the oil tanker "Victoria" was attacked by a German submarine, although the Argentine ship managed to reach New York. Finally, in June of that year, the merchant ship "Río Tercero" was sunk, which caused a great social and political scandal in Argentina. However, in all three cases the German Reich offered explanations and compensation and the Argentine governments chose not to break off diplomatic relations.
