Min Yang Leong - The Happy Man (VIDEO REQUEST)
Показать описание
Since I graduated from high school 3 years back, I had been experiencing a long drought of musical inspiration. Until that one morning in August 2015, I woke up from a very bizarre dream in which I composed a tune along with a rhythm in the background. Having the notes still somewhat fresh in my memory before it would be forsaken by my growing consciousness, I got hold of a pencil and scribbled every vague detail that I could remember on a piece paper. That evening, I sat in front of my computer with my Finale on and worked on the fragmented pieces of information and voila! I created this composition within four nights (I was busy in the day). That is the story of its birth.
Written in no particular style, it begins with a medium walking swing tempo. Its tune is light and simple - something a cheerful person would whistle to. Imagine a guy with nothing but a hat and a coat on, leaving his house and locking the doors while whistling. Now he decides to take a stroll around town; this is where a relaxing guitar rhythm provides a steady tempo and rhythm for the main motif of the whole composition in the right hand. Shortly after that, a quasi-salsa rhythm takes over as he sees the girl whom he fancies. His heart flutters; his mind is filled with fireworks as he falls in love with her demeanour. With the will to seize the day, he musters his courage and walks up to her. "Fancy a dance?" With a very simple transition, the piece goes into a tango tempo with the same motif where the scene changes from the streets to one on a stage with no audience. With a spotlight on both of them, she holds his hands. And with a beckoning smile on her face, she dances with him. Soon, passion takes over and they both dance to yet another fast-paced salsa. The dance goes on and leaves the both of them with joy and content; how they wish, especially him, that time would just stop at that wonderful and pure moment.
Yet, as the music rings at a higher pitch, reality hits him as he realises that it has all been but a dream; the girl was never there, the dance did not happen. Returning to reality, the music returns to its original swing tempo as he discovers a philosophy in life: happiness does not approach anyone; it is something that is created from deep within the mind. With that realisation in mind, he continues his stroll with a bigger smile on his face.
