People never look at it like this: Obito is a kid who got ostracized by almost everyone being not only an Uchiha, but also being below the standards of an Uchiha. He has no family other than his grandma and his team. What happens when you take a genuinely kind kid and you start to break him? He's missing an arm, a leg, his eye, most of his body and his face is mutilated. All that but still held out for hope until he watched the guy he gave his life for kill the person he loved. You find out she dies because 2 countries wanted a super weapon and died for nothing. He literally only gets beat down and sees nothing but cruelty throughout his life. His kindness got him nowhere, and he lost everything. With everything that happens, he gets manipulated into destroying the world. Literally broken down physically and mentally. He's living a horrible nightmare of pain and suffering that no one ever wants to even think about. All that and he wasn't even 20 years old yet. Now imagine that happens to you in real life.

The sad thing is that Obito still didn't want Kakashi to be sad.

I just realized that Obito could have casted the genjutsu on himself without the beasts during anytime of the story. He could have spent a millenia in his own head, living any lifes he wants to until his body ages and dies. He had access to the salvation he wanted so badly, and the reason he did not just do it is because he genuinely wants everyone else in the world to be happy before he gets his own dream.

When Obito tells Kakashi that he knows he has been suffering all this time, he sounds like he understands that pain and that he doesn’t want Kakashi to keep feeling that pain.

When Rin died she became less of a person to Obito and more of a symbol of peace and happiness because when Obito could find none in his childhood, he always had Rin to make things better. When Rin died he saw the last ray of light in his life get overcrowded by the darkness. It was more than just fighting for ‘a girl’. It was fighting for peace and happiness for everyone.

As I get older I sympathize with Obito more. He was trying to save everyone from the pain of reality. He even wanted to give people who wronged him a second chance in that dream world.
