The King’s Speech confirmed Labour’s plans to impose VAT on private school fees to fund new teachers in state classrooms.

The Prime Minister has previously said the tax would be enough to fund Labour’s childcare policy, as well as hiring 6,500 new teachers.

Talk’s David Bull discusses the plans with principal of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts Simon Larter-Evans.

If they put VAT onto private schools and parents move children to state schools the income from VAT will reduce cancelling those extra incomes to the Treasury.

VERY DEFINITELY THE POLITICS OF ENVY.

Thanks for balanced introduction. It's a huge misconception that all private school parents are super rich.

Didn’t take Labour long to start screwing things up. This is why we need REFORM of the political system.

Only the parents who enrol their children in independent schools and the middle classes would understand the difficulties. It's only a few percent out of 7%.

The most challenging part is that they want to move their children to state schools. However, all the state schools are full. It will probably end up with the children staying at home and waiting for a space. The children who are currently in independent schools might end up with no school to attend.

I believe our government needs to prepare to accommodate a larger number of children or teenagers transferring from independent schools to state schools before increasing the VAT on independent schools. They can't expect every single family who has their children in independent schools to suddenly afford to pay an extra 20%. It's a lot of money! Most parents have more than one child.😢

We can see the old Labour policy of cash grab. Then spend spend spend, borrow, borrow, borrow and finally broke, no money left in the tin. This has been Labours approach each time they were in power and now again.

600, 000 public school pupils. 50, 000 foreign students. 50, 000 non-fee payers.

At least a third to a half of pupils struggle to pay. Children with Special Educational Needs.

If half the parents can no longer afford the fees, then 250, 000 kids will have to be found places at state schools at £6k or 7k. So will cost £2bn, if the industry collapses completely will cost in excess of £4bn.

my partner works at a private school, all staff get a big discount for their children to be privately educated. They have been told if VAT is added to the cost these discounts will know longer be an option

VAT was a tax imposed by The EU, so why are we still paying it on ANYTHING, and why is nobody questioning this?

If they tax Private School fees and people cannot afford to go private and are forced to send their Kids to Public school, then they will complain and complain about the substandard of education in state schools by sub-standard policies and sub-standard staff .,
They are not blessed with brains in the Labour Party, not one Labour MP thought to mention that this would highlight how bad state schools are and parents will demand Government action, which they are incapable of doing. Labour is in power for a fortnight and doing a worse job than Liz Truss lol.

It will create larger, less manageable classes and we already have teachers leaving in droves because of unsolvable discipline problems reducing their effectiveness in the classroom

Private schools are less likely to impose the sexual content of RSE or tolerate the transgender nonsense. Also the teachers are accountable to the parents to deliver good education
