Looking to find a seam that is strong and durable? The flat felled seam, or felled seam, is just what is needed. This is the preferred seam in jeans, denim jackets, and other casual garments that get rough and tough wear.

A flat felled seam is commonly seen on sportswear and menswear. It is a strong flat seam that will not fray. This tutorial will show how to make a flat felled seam, commonly seen on jeans and denim jackets, that has two rows of stitches on the right side of the fabric.

What is a flat felled seam?
The felled seam, or flat-fell seam, is a seam made by placing one edge inside a folded edge of fabric, then stitching the fold down. The fold encases the raw edges and protects them from fraying.

The fold is secured with edgestitching. It is useful for keeping seam allowances flat and covering raw edges, along with providing a strong and durable seam.

This quick and no-frills or extra talking video will have you sewing a flat fell seam in less than 3 minutes!

Hello Alisha,

If you make a mock flat felled seam, you can use twin needles to stitch. For a mock flat felled seam, you would sew a plain 5/8" seam with right sides of fabric together. Press both the seam allowances to one side and serge or zigzag the seam allowance to give it a finished look. From the project outside (right side), you can use twin needles to stitch two parallel lines anchoring the seam allowance.

This is one of the "Best" if not the best sewing tutorial I have seen on YouTube. The camera positioning, lighting, fabric with contrasting thread and your clear, yet to-the-point explanations is truly applaudable.
QUESTION: is there another method using a twin needle?
Thank you, wishing you continued success.

Thank you, thank you, I've a split king Sleep Number bed and used this stitch to sew two Twin XL top sheets together for my "king" top sheet.  Perfect...I'm impressed with myself.  Thanks for taking time to provide this tutorial, very well done, easy to follow, professional and concise.

Hello, great video, thank you. I understand the seam but when it's used on a sleeve is it possible to for it to be the only seam ? I looking to sew a drysuit for kayaking out of waterproof material . I want to sew the first step of the flat felled seam and then put "shoe goo" for waterproofing in the seam fold before sewing the second step. I'm planning on using raglan style sleeves. I want as few seams as possible. Do flat felled seams on a sleeve or pant leg always need another seam on the opposite side ? What are the options for a second equally strong ( and sealable ) seam as the other seam ? Would I be better off sewing those single seams by hand ? Thank you for your time.

Thanks, i can't find a video to show how to get the factory humpy look on the outside of a pair of Levis legs. They all look like Amish made pants without the humpy look. Can you address this? thanks

Nice video, but most of my jeans with this seam have them on the outer and the inseam. How can I sew this on both sides of the legs?

Can you use a wide hemmer foot to get an extra straight second seam?

Can you make more of these fast and direct videos? I have started late in life, and don't have time to sit and watch people blabber, and pin and iron.
