Here's my math:
Wedding DJ - $2,000
Club DJ - $400

Full Time Wedding DJ Per Event – 30 Hours – Hourly Rate of $66.66
Club DJ Per Event – 6 Hours - Hourly Rate of $66.66

Wedding DJ Expenses:
$2,000 - $600 = $1400 Total = Hourly Rate of $46.66

Club DJ Expenses:
$400 - $50 = $350 = Hourly Rate of $58.33

I have reached the stage (1, 500+ weddings, 500+ other events) where I don’t need the money. However much we say each wedding is individual & special in reality they are largely very similar and I have got bored with them. As you get older you are ideally suited to landmark age parties and wedding anniversaries 50th, 60th, 70th, silver, golden, etc. Such events are often held in private residencies and money is no object.

Brian, I think you are getting there! You can play (and enjoy) the music of your youth which will be what the host/hostess enjoys too. If you play at private clubs you will also get the chance to play similar music and that is where you will find your birthday ‘boys’ & ‘girls’.

Let other DJs flog themselves to death with wedding bookings and just do what you enjoy.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and breaking it down on about how much time and effort go into being a wedding DJ. I know there are DJs out there that only charge for the hours they are at the venue for DJING a wedding.
For me you have to think like a plumber or electrician, they charge for every minute that’s involved with fixing or working on what you need to have fixed.
My motto is time is money. I do get asked by couples why some DJ’s or so cheap with their prices for wedding, I tell them the only thing I can think of they are not putting in the time and effort to their weddings the do, basically those DJ’s are generic DJs that have one play list for cocktail hr, 1 playlist for dinner hr and for the dancing for the night again 1 play list and then throw a few extra songs in the bride and groom want to hear.
I make sure each of our clients know we put the time and effort into their wedding so it’s not just a Generic Wedding.
Great Video my friend @briansredd

I’m currently DJing both club and weddings. I love both world. Doing clubs is less $$ but it’s really good practice, and the more your out there, the more private gigs you can acquire

Good job, I understand that completely

I think this depends entirely on the efficiency of your business processes. If I were spending $600 per wedding I'd have a serious conversation as to whether it's worth it or not.

That aside, lots of great advice here for club vs wedding.

You are correct, I made more money in a club. The club was no big equipment and it was once a week And not having to deal with bridezillas and all the time driving setting up and tear down F That .

I can't see a full 30 hours for 1 wedding event for 6 hours. Maybe 15 to 20 hours.

Each wedding is an average of 18 hours for me... so i don't want to disagree, it's just how i work....
I love both, clubs & wedding contracts.... i love go on a bar with just my controller, computer and monitor to bring hehe...

Good breakdown of costs, but if you are really into the music vibe, money has little to do with your dj'ing. I played Donny Osmond's Puppy Love at an outdoor event last Sunday. you can't do that at a wedding or club.

all those years ago i would say club/bar dj is a lot better.
no stress .. buying gear or getting it repaired or replacing it
getting there and setting up then praying its all working
doing the show then packking all that crap back up and going home undloading and by the time you do get your head down it could 3-5am
now the club/bar just turn up with your music... thats it end of.😉

At a club you dont have to set up much . Just make sure drinks get sold .
