Review of the Presonus Studio Channel vacuum tube mic preamp from American Musical Supply. It has a built in compressor, eq, and tube drive circuit. I compare to sound to my built in preamp from my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 and show some of the feature of the preamp.

I bought this last year... Still use it till this day. Very awesome sound. I like the fact that the knobs are "notched" because I can go to a point in the knob where I feel it's precised. I don't know.. That's just me. Keep up the good work posting this type of stuff man. You my hero. -Eddie Griffin Voice- lol

Yep I just bought one of these last week...Swapped the tube with a Tungsol 12A87 and my vocals sound great now that I have found the best settings for my voice..Love it..I'm using it with the AT4033/CL. Nice video. I will be posting one soon.

That is some hot powerful sound with the mic. My recordings on my songs I write are a mess. I am going to aim for this same set-up. Spot on with the lesson.

The main thing you will need is something that will allow you to get your mic input into your computer. If you want daw control looking into a hybrid mixer/control surface may make more sense. Or even something like the project mix

Thanks for the video! I have the same interface, and I am having the same issues that you had. I will be picking up the PreSonus Studio Channel now.

Good review Joe. Channel strips are a big time saver b/c you don't have to do as much with the audio once its already recorded. I have a Drawmer MX Pro 60 Front End which has a really good pre despite the price. The Drawmer channel strip doesn't have notched knobs on it like your Presonus Studio Channel and I actually prefer the stepped or notched knobs b/c it's easier to match settings or duplicate settings. Anyway congrats on your new channel strip.

I have the studio channel as well...EQing and tube drive are very subjective (you will have find the setting that sounds good to your ear for those two features). As for compression, you shouldn't over compress going into your DAW, b/c it will decrease your dynamic range and make your vocals sound dull and boring. Also you want to leave room for boosting by compression later. Threshold: 12, Ratio: 2:1, fast release & attack, 4-6db make up gain, and soft knee. I also use the EQ>Comp option.

I read reviews about this unit being noisy but I assumed it was people cranking the gains and not setting it up right. So I bought one and it was indeed too noisy. I bought a new Tung-Sol gold pin tube for it but still...the unit had too much self-noise...enough to make it unuseable for music production. Sad, because I really, REALLY liked everything about the sound and the tube saturation really livened up my vocals. It gave them that produced, "pro-sound". I ended up donating it to my church. My first and last Presonus product.

Hey great review. Just grabbed one of these last week from M.F. And your info helped. One question; Are you running out of the P.S.C. XLR into the XLR input on your Scarlett, or using the TRS ins/outs? I have a 1 foot XLR to TRS 1/4" cable that seems to be just fine for this. But I'm wondering if I should use only XLR's, or only TRS's . . . ? Thanks
