I’m sorry but Russia really doesn’t understand Americans. Most Americans don’t even consider the war Russia is fighting with Ukraine to be top 3 concerns, many not even top 10. Higher priority issues for the Americans: border, tax reform, the upcoming renegotiation of the US-CAN-MEX trade deal, rent control and housing prices, immigration, economic entanglement with China, the green transition and how we will manage that, etc. The thing about Americans is that the more you threaten them the more they want to fight. Iran yelling “death to America” for example causes it to be considered enemy number 1. Honestly Russia saying “make a deal” or “nuclear war” hasn’t worked and it will never work. All it does is tell Americans that Russia isn’t serious about a peace deal. Now if Russia was like “hey, let’s make a deal where we keep the lands we conquered AND Ukraine gets to join the EU and we both pull back from deploying forces near the borders AND we both resume previous nuclear deals AND we get our money back” then I think you would see America be like “now we have someone to talk with”. At some point Russia has to accept the reality that the Ukrainians will hate Russia for at least a 100 years and the best way to get security is to find a deal that causes that hatred to die down as fast as possible.
