Not much is happening with AppImages, nobody likes Snaps, but flatpaks are gaining are lot of traction as of late especially with release of the Steam Deck which is the primary method to install software.

Good info. Got rid of some unused 'freedesktop', 'gnome'Platform' and 'kde.Platform' packages I've been noticing errors during Flatpak updates. Also helped me pick names for an install script i've made for a fresh install of Mint 20.3

Another way to get past the ID being cut off is to search without description by adding

--columns=name, application, version, branch, remotes

and you could remove "version" and "branch" if that info isn't vital to you

I love flatpak. It is simple when needed and powerful when needed.

Flatpak can be completely self-contained. You can ship them on a thumb drive or 📀. You would use the flatpak command that converts the Flatpak to USB and make sure the command does not check online for dependencies.

Tip: you don't need to "flatpak install com.whatever", just e.g. "flatpak install firefox" works as it will search for similar results for one to choose

Great Video Brodie. Could you possibly make a video explaining how to set up dark or system theme to Flatpak applications like say Okular or Dolphin? There are tutorials out there but somehow, I couldn't make it work. Thank You.

I already knew how to use flatpaks, so I decided to pretend to watch this as a newbie who just got a steamdeck and the most confusing part are the application IDs. Makes me wonder if there'll ever be an alternative to those

Everything I need to know about flatpaks is their contents. Let's say I receive a security advisory regarding certain libraries and consequently those libraries need updating. I do that for my base system but how do I identify which flatpaks are using those libraries so i can take appropriate action. Or I am deploying software to systems with specific hardware/software requirements (like GPU and MESA) and I need specific version of MESA to function correctly. How do I check the flatpaks to ensure they meet my software requirements. Most system admins will want a certain level of confidence regarding what a package contains before deploying it! So I assume this can be done with flatpaks, snaps or app-images!

Wow I didn't know you could run flatpaks without typing flatpak...But that won't work with dmenu wouldn't it?
I got a question about FLATPAK, generally I love it, but it gets really annoying, when the flatpak Godot does not have a permission to communicate with my external text editor (and run it). Or when GDevelop can't use usb joystick...
Is there a way to allow those applications work as they were intended?

I used to install flatpaks as user just for the added security (not sure if this is really the case but it's what I assumed) but then had to share a computer with sb else and realized that I'd just end up having 2 of the same app installed and eating up my storage so I now install everything systemwide. Does anyone know if there's even a difference in security between the two?

thanks for this basic intro
What's the permission manager called that you mentioned?

I like flatpack as you are installing from software that is coming from the Arch Linux users group.
Don't like it, as it is slower. The local mirror linked via apt-get.

How do you install flatpak if you're not on a supported platform? I'm tempted to just use the .deb and deb2tgz it, but for something like this I would like to ensure compatibility.

If one of these days you get bored and without ideas for new videos, I suggest trying an obscure window manager: PekWM
