The Rust Twitch Rivals Disaster Explained

Last weekend, a huge Rust Twitch rivals tournament involving North American and Spanish streamers imploded in a big way.

The Spanish streamers accused Twitch of rigging the game in the North American’s favour, while they themselves have been accused of inciting racism.

Streamers like Disguised Toast, xQc and Shroud have now weighed in one what might be one of the most insane Twitch stories of the year. Here’s how it happened…

Weird that a rust/twitch rivals controversy where xQc was playing has almost 0 to do with anything xQc did/said lmfao

Just to explain it.
Breaking twig and raiding wasn’t a rule but then after NA did this to the Spanish they threatened to quit. After they threatened to quit the admins added a rule no raiding or breaking bases. Then after the Spanish got the rule added they broke the rule by raiding NA’s base. The rule they wanted added they broke themselves.

Toast's first clip about the MP5 is slightly taken out of context again. Before the clip shown in this video he also states that he had requested an Admin to skin his gun. So it wasnt just that the game was over, it was that he owned that gun and it was reskined for him. Just wanted to put that clarification out there

Props for Toast he has always been the one standing in front taking the brunt of hates whenever some events he attended went wrong and always handled them like a boss, a truly professional entertainer indeed.

Rust and drama goes with each other pretty well.. when OTV organized their rust event similiar drama happened, whenever there are big streamers and rust, drama is almost inevitable..

So this event was a perfect representation what rust basically is: cheaters, racists and a lot of screeching kiddos.

Why did most Spanish streamers delete their vods though? Would have been helpful to prove their point esp on their POV.

Toast is classy man, handled that situation and series of insults like a true e-sportsman.

You forgot to mention when the NA side accidentally broke their twig base, the Spanish side all logged out to complain. Afterwards, the rules were heavily clarified about breaking bases and entering bases, which the Spanish side completely disregarded and full raided the NA side base. After the mods got involved and undid all the stuff stolen, the Spanish side complained and got a few hundred points that they illegally got returned to them. If anything, the mods gave only an advantage to the Spanish side. I'm glad we will never have to see most those players return to these tournaments

As a fellow Asian, I found the racism of the Spainish viewers very disturbing. This is simply unacceptable and disgusting behavior from the Spainish fans and idk why they feel entitled to say these things to another human being.

Also the parts where Spanish Streamers were sending their followers into NA streamers chat saying sexist, homophobic, and racist shit should have gotten the Spanish streamers who were apart of it banned. Anyone who does this shit should be banned regardless or at most suspended for a bit on Twitch

Here's the chain of events that actually happened and created the controversy on Day 1:

-Spanish team destroyed the NA team's base in the first 2 hours and spawncamped them.
-Spanish team used a shot gun (which wasn't allowed at the time as nail guns were the only guns that weren't banned) to destroy the NA team for another raid
-When the NA team started crafting shot guns, the Spanish team was outraged and started building revolvers. The NA team soon responded to that as well by equipping their raiders with revolvers. Spanish team already started complaining that NA was using revolvers, even though they started it.

-NA team led by Hjune and CoconutB raided the Spanish island.
-The Spanish team thought they could skip out on building a base because rules disallowed base destruction (which they ignored when raiding the NA team at the start but nobody complained as it was early on in the game) so they built their entire base out of a material (twig) that falls apart after having been shot once or twice by even the most basic weapons.
-During the NA raid, 2 pieces of the building (a door frame and a piece of the roof) were destroyed by one of the people in CoconutB's strike team. This is when the admins were first called by the Spanish after they left the server en-masse. Clips of other "base destruction" also surfaced, but that was just stray shots eventually dealing damage to the twig walls in the massive gunfight.
-Admins apologised, saying "we didn't expect a team to build their entire base out of twig, so we didn't make twig indestructible"
-NA team gave back the 300 or so wood and materials they got during the raid and were penalised for -200 dog tags.
Fast forward 10 or so hours:

-The NA team raided an "oil rig" event that awarded materials and 100 dog tags for completion while the Spanish team was doing it. Liquid Mendo found a spot after they cleared out the initial Spanish players to ambush the reinforcements, picking up +9 kills by himself.
-Ricoy from the Spanish team responded to their loss at the oil rig by claiming the NA team was using "Phantom" revolvers and SMGs (coming from the gun sounds the NPCs on the oil rig made) that the teams weren't allowed to use yet, and quickly convinced his team to craft phantoms themselves.
-Equipped with Tier 2 guns, the Spanish team raided the NA team who then eventually responded by creating phantoms themselves.

-Meanwhile, Ricoy, a member of the Spanish team kept leaving toxic messages in global chat and spreading similar misinformation to the Spanish team, who didn't bother to check what he said was true and took him at his word.
-This escalated to Ricoy calling the NA team a bunch of "RETARDS" and AlexB (Spanish team leader) starting an "n-word" spam in an attempt to upset the NA team.
-Chat hoppers eventually joined into NA streamers chats to call them racist slurs and leave mysoginist comments on both their streams and twitter. The "upper crust" of the Spanish team naturally joined in, telling some of the asian-american streamers on the NA team to "eat a dog" and send them pictures of dogs.

Wait wait wait.... So they ignored to point out the facts that the NA team majorly broke the twig because they were being roof camped by the Spanish team? Obviously, when you shoot at someone on the roof, there would be bullets that hit the twig. The NA team also gave back all the loot plus stuff to the Spanish team when asked to stop raiding by the Admins. There was an admin discussion after that with Toast, hJune from the NA team and Ricoy, Alexby11 from the Spanish team where it was then agreed that both teams will not be attacking either main bases and that a base protection for the 15x15 grid was now enabled. Keep in mind, that both Alexby11 and Ricoy agreed on this call that the NA team had given back the loot to the Spanish team. After this, the Spanish team then looted stuff from the NA base and wanted to keep it because all those items were high tier loot, not even remotely comparable to what the NA team had tried looting from them. Stuff like explosives, high quality metal, components, etc. The NA team had stolen a scrap heli from the Spanish team in the meanwhile (which btw, wasn't 2 doors deep and thus, lootable) and when the admins asked the Spanish team to give back the stolen loot, they asked for the scrap heli in return. The admins decided that the scrap heli would be allowed to purchase via outpost so the NA team heli bombed the Spanish team's Scrap heli and purchased a new one for themselves using scrap. The racism was not just from the viewers and there's enough evidence of the Spanish team spamming Ñ as an insult apart from Ricoy himself using the R word in the global chat of a Twitch Rival event where collectively more than half a million viewers atleast were watching it. The Spanish team felt that it was unfair because the oil rig crate spawn was disabled. Each crate amounted to 20% of the total dogtags accumulated at the time of opening it and had pretty much the highest value towards wins and coupled with their scrap heli, the Spanish team would easily get it and just shoot from above at the NA team that had to come up to them in multiple boats. With 20+ people shooting at you from oil rig, it would have been an impossible task for the team that fights the team holding the crates, which is proved by the crate that NA got when they held it down against them. After losing this fight, the Spanish team accused the NA team of using a higher tier weapon known as the python revolver at oil rig to kill them. The NA team had not used a python at oil and weren't even aware of being able to use it apart from the sole exception of Spoonkid. He got one in military tunnels and was able to use it when all higher tier weapons were unusable. You could have an ak but it was useless on the first day cuz you couldn't shoot it even if you wanted to. He thus, asked an admin if using it was okay and it was confirmed that 'since it is not listed in weapons that cannot be used', that it was alright to use it after tier 2 workbench was unlocked and he did. The list mentioned was available to both teams btw. Keep in mind that not even the NA team was aware of this or informed about it but as soon as the Spanish team lost a fight revolvers v/s revolvers at oil rig, they started accusing the NA team of cheating and using pythons 'at oil rig' to gain an advantage. They then proceeded to craft their own pythons and killing the NA team and the NA team retaliated, easily being able to win their fights equipped with a python.
Another accusation the Spanish team made was that of the admins quick despawning and respawning the raid bases, which upon successful raids, gave 5% of total accumulated dog tags by both teams. However, the admins weren't the ones doing it, but it was a part of the plugin that was used for the raid bases, publicly available to everyone which was confirmed by hJune in his recent stream.
The Spanish team felt that the times were favoured for the NA team, however, this was a 50 hour event and the game itself is Rust. Every Rust player who has even a couple hundred hours on the game would know that a 24/7 event lasting about 3 days would not have favourable times, much less Rust players that play professionally. You snooze, you loose is the literal story of every Rust wipe. They were just unhappy that they couldn't get one of their smaller streamers to camp oil rig the whole night, staring at a literal wall so that the crates would not spawn and they get unfair advantage since crate spawns were moved to land for better pvp content.

Im a spaniard, and honestly, i think my team is crying a lot. Rust is about being asleep with ur headphones on, so if they start a raid, you can defend. Also, tournament or not, rust must not have rules. If u get raided and destroyed, they are better.

Furthermore, im absolutely disgusted with the spanish team members. All the jokes and insults they said. I hope u guys dont see every spaniard this way, cuz we are not like that, but its sad that the ones that represent us are.

Honestly, the event was entertaining even if there was drama

This concept is really cool! I hope they do it again and fix some things with the feedback they got this time. I think the main thing to remove is the region war factor, it ruins communication and caused more fighting (not in game) I really hope to see this again though

Despite it all, it was so entertaining to watch! As their first rust event, there's only room for improvement. The organizers, the devs, admins all did so well to make it as fun for everyone as they could <3 huge props to them, especially Toast. So excited to see what they come up with next!

To be fair, the spanish streamers losing in rivals and claiming that there was cheating is nothing new. It happened in a lot if twitch rivals minecraft events.

More recently, they kept saying that the french botted during r/place, using a clip of a french streamer saying "17.000 upvotes" and mistranslating to "17000 bots". Ironically, they themselves started distributing bots to their community during this event.
