Jesus taught the world how to see the person.

We are constantly facing the temptation to define people by their group or by their shame. Jesus reveals that, while He knows the group and knows the shame, He sees the person...the individual...and calls them by their name.

I’ve been praying to remember to do this. It can be hard, sometimes, especially when so many insist that sinful behavior must be approved/blessed, lest you condemn the sinner.

I so love this story. Jesus didn't just know this woman's shame, but also gently pointed out her religious heresy. But he didn't even ask her to repent. Instead, he said, "Hey, do you want to live forever?" He offered her the living water of baptism and the Holy Spirit. He told her that the time was coming when her heresy wouldn't matter anymore. He told her he is Messiah.
