Ninh explains – The Rules of Pato (Horseball), which is the official national sport of Argentina. It’s played on horses and is very similar to polo, except that the ball the (Pato) is throwing into a goal. Think of this as polo, mixed with basketball and Quidditch. It’s a great game to watch and play.

Watch this short beginner’s tutorial video guide on how Pato is played, Pato rules and guidelines, and how to play Pato.
Learn about goals, penalty, cinchada, tussle, negada, penalty, goals and more..

This new series of Ninh explains will probably deal with some of the more obscure sports that you may or may not have heard of.
Obviously, people aren’t going to be searching for these, so please share my videos where you can. Help my content get seen so that I can carry on making more of it.
Thank you for your continued support and let me know what videos you’d like to see!
😊

I love learning about obscure sports like this! It opens up the world and is refreshing to know there is more than just the same old stuff you see regularly. PAto and Horseball seem like interesting sport and looks like a mix of Polo, Handball and Tug-of-war. Keep these coming!

It seems great but I feel like the Federación Argentina de Pato (aka FAP) should probably change their name

Thanks for this video. I teach Spanish and this is super-helpful as a cultural item during our "deportes" unit.
Much appreciated.

So with Turkish oil wrestling and pato, you’re looking for the more obscure, even weirder sports… should be fun!

Even though football is vastly more popular here, Pato was chosen as the national sport because it was traditionally played by gauchos (sort of cowboys from Argentina). I don't think many people play it nowadays either, as polo is the more popular horseback sport here. Anyway, good video as always!

Pato is Spanish for duck and in early versions of the game a live duck was used instead of a ball. Teams consisted of members from neighboring ranches, who would try to carry the duck back to their home turf to win. Also, while many people were killed by falling off their horses, many more were killed in knife fights that broke out during the game. And people say soccer riots are violent!

Thank you for doing this video! I suggested it in your last video :D Some data of Pato: pato is spanish for "duck"; and this is why it's called like that: back in 18th century the "gauchos" played it all around "Pampa" with a duck inside a leather bag. They fought for the "pato" riding their horses and tried to run with the duck to their house to eat the duck (and sometimes gauchos killed anothers in fights because of the game). There weren't any field size: all the Pampa was the field. It was forbidden from 1822 until 1938, when the rules were created (yes! before pato hadn't any written rules!). As Polo, Pato's players have handicap (known as "Ventaja" -it's not allowed to use english words-) and 10 is the maximum. In 1953 the president Perón declared Pato as national sport and gave himself 10 goals of Ventaja, although he never played it.
