I have connected a monitor to my laptop (wndows8) with hdmi cable. How do i limit certain applications such as an investment broker to be visual solely on the monitor or parts of their application such as a stock watchlist, Or is this not possible.

I have connected my monitor to the pc as well as the laptop but there is no image showing on the monitor, can someone please help?
the cable that connects the monitor to my pc is HDMI, and the cable that connects the monitor to my laptop is a display to HDMI cable. I have tried multiple times but the screen does not appear, only the Control Panel.

Monitor is an Odyssey G5 and laptop is a MacBook Air, I have also tried it with a Lenovo laptop.
