Mongoose Malus Fat Tire Bike from Amazon

Показать описание
The Mongoose Malus is a Fat tire bike available through Amazon. It is similar to the Mongoose Dolomite found at Walmart, but has a silver frame that is slightly largervthan the Dolomote. The bicycle features 26 x 4.0 fat tires and a Shimano Tourney powered 1x7 drivetrain.

This is my first look at a fat bike, and I have had lots of fun with the Mongoose Malus. The bike currently costs $319.99 on Amazon. I don't consider big box fat bikes to be upgrade platforms as the parts cost too much, but this bike will receive a couple of small upgrades: a trigger shifter in place of the twist shifter, and a Shimano 7-speed Mega Range freewheel that will hopefully make the bike more useable on hilly terrain and/or mountain bike trails.

I just picked one up at Academy with the bike shortage going on and it is an absolute blast! It’s loud, but you can’t stop smiling riding this thing. Thank you for the pointers on upgrading! I hope there’s a follow up video showing that too.

Been riding fatbikes for over 8 the concept. Big surly fan so steel forks are fine. This 1x7 is undershooting the mark by miles.... to appreciate the concept you have to be able to roll slow and easy, those 7 gears make that impossible offroad .
Love the video, keep on " trucking" !

I've had one for a couple of years now and upgraded the bars to 780mm risers, a longer lighter stem, hydraulic brakes and better saddle. But now that you've talked about a mega range freewheel, I'm on it. Thanks for another great video!

Looks like it could be a lot of fun, but non-replacable hangers always hurt me inside.

I just ordered this bike on Amazon (pre order), can’t wait until it comes in! It’s rated as being able to hold my weight (310 pounds). The Brilliant Cooper came in as well, I know I’m too heavy for it but I’ve been riding it, awesome and smooth. My hands are bigger so i keep switching gears by mistake hahaha.

I just picked up a Mongoose "Beast" Single speed 56 pound fat bike, and my cruising speed was just under 11mph overall. Top speed dogged out was 18mph with a slight decline in the road. I did what was suppose to be a 32 mile ride but ended up 46 1/2 miles, and I took that because I wanted a workout... First time I ever was in physical pain from a bike ride, my upper legs and knees were cramping and burning like mad OMG! Made it back to the van, and I gained so much credit from my bike riding friends for being crazy enough to do that on this bike.

So this Malus looks like a dream compared to that used $100 marketplace special I picked up. But mine is without a doubt a workout machine!

Thank you for this review. I’d seen several other cheap fat bike reviews that seem like complaint lists of experts who are used to $3000 bikes. I haven’t ridden in several years and I want the exercise benefits of simply riding a bike that I can beat on, and this seems to fit the bill. I don’t plan on anything long distance, just stuff within a few blocks, and that includes several terrain types. My yard is challenging to mow, and I can see myself having a ball with this bike just “monster trucking” around the yard/local area in it. Again, thank you!

I have a dolomite that I just put wake bars and a gt stem on I had laying around along with a sram x-4 trigger shifter and derailleur and a mega range cassette also changed out the brake levers for aluminum ones. The stock plastic ones flex and make the brakes feel squishy and inadequate. It’s a whole new beast now.

These fat bikes are for sure fun. And the double walled rims are practically indestructible (especially running higher psi) ive been using broken sidewalks, kurbs, roots, snd other things as ramps and im impressed by the height i can get. Had this since 2009 and the rims are still perfectly straight. No turning needed

Great review. I ride a Mongoose Hitch, which is very similar. I'm amazed to see how much the price has gone up on these. When I bought my Hitch a few years ago, it was about $240 (brand new). I made two upgrades right away that made a big improvement in performance. First was all aluminum brake levers. The cable operated disc brakes are 'OK' on the bike, but the half plastic levers allowed too much flex when braking hard, greatly reducing the braking power of the discs. Second was getting a decent set of all aluminum 'bmx style' pedals. Again, the plastic pedals just flex too much. All in all, it's a fun bike to ride and gets questions and comments on every ride. At this point, I'm into mind for under $300.

I scored mine for $100 off Craigslist. I put on shimano hydraulic brakes, raliegh stem and 760 bars, a specialized seat, sram X3 8 speed shifter and deraileur, and a 76bcd crank set. All that was laying around. I bought a 180 front rotors, a 13-34t 8 speed freewheel, and a 26t front ring. I greased all the bearings after cleaning out the oil they build it with. With all that, this thing is a serious goat for what it is. It gets around as well as my diamondback 1x11 hardtail.

Thank you! :) I always wondered if those cheap fatbikes were good for anything, hence I requested you take a look at them because I love your honest, objective reviews of bikes that elitists wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, just for the fact that they’re very affordable doesn’t mean you can’t get your dollar’s worth.

I just bought one of these yesterday. I’m gonna add a rear rack and fenders. Lights front and rear. And mounts from my bow .

Academy used to sell these for $200. At that price they were a good deal. They also came with lighter wheels that had weight relief cuts that made a big difference. The biggest weakness of these bikes is the axles for the hubs. They are known to bend pretty easily. Also the bottom bracket is a non standard size.

Thanks for the down to earth review. The upgrade tips are especially valuable.
