One of the problems with the situation was that the people on the ground kept adding tasks to the flight plan that hadn't been on the original schedule because there was so much that everyone wanted to check out with the new spacecraft. It wasn't all the fault of the three astronauts.

Another issue was that, after the mission, Don Eisley was the first of the American Astronauts to get divorced, disrupting the public image of the wholesome Astronaut families that was a big part of NASA publicity. Eisley then quickly remarried, upsetting the Astronauts' wives' club, some who supported his former wife, and some who felt that his new wife should be admitted since she was, in fact, an astronaut wife. The club disbanded instead of admitting the new wife.

I remember how critical Schirra was of NASA after the Apollo 7 mission. I thought he was great to speak out instead of just letting the bad management get away with their mistakes for the sake of his career.

Colds are already uncomfortable, but I never realized how much gravity plays a role in helping to flush it out. I remember Schirra's commercials, too! I was just a kid, but for some reason his seriousness burned that image in my memory. I had no idea at the time he was an astronaut.
