In "The Time Machine" the narrator comes to a beach of the dying Earth where he encounters a red crablike creature that preys upon some butterflies, and it's implied these are the final descendants of the Morlocks and Eloi. The novella originally had a scene where the traveler encounters some centipede-like descendants of the Morlocks from a period before the dying Earth -- this scene was cut out of the original publication, but it can be found restored in modern renditions. (The time traveler describes the Morlocks as "antlike" when he originally encounters them).
So, crabs are just proto-Morlocks???
