Are you wanting to master your foiling gybes, or have a go at riding switch stance?
In this third video in our ‘Wing Foiling Series’ Reuben explains how to successfully get around your foiling gybes, as well as offering some top tips for riding switch stance. Timings, foot and body positioning and board trim are key to success… as well as lots of practice!

There are lots of beginner vids already out there telling you the basics of Winging & Wing Foiling. Our videos will be focussing on what appear to be the main stumbling blocks. So whether you’re totally new to Wing Foiling and yet to hit the water, or you’ve already committed and got your own gear but are struggling… we hope these videos will be useful.

Part 1 – The foil… How it works under your feet and how to control it when you start to fly!
Part 2 – Getting flying and staying flying in lighter winds
Part 3 – Foiling gybes and going switch stance

Brilliant. Some gems in this one.
I’d like to add 1 point “underhand grip” on entering gybe

tip from years of mountain bike coaching, brought into wing: don't think about foot pressure when initiating the turn, start higher up - with your vision (look to the exit of the turn), shoulders (rotate towards that exit) body (low and twisting round) ...this naturally and smoothly applies both inside pressure and front foot pressure, to stop you stalling and to initiate a super smooth turn with speed maintained

Like the bent elbow tip. Having a hard time going up wind switched.

I have had my toe or heal lift of the board so have tried putting my feet away from the centre line . I have also tried to keep my body in line with the mast . Any ideas

Very good tutorial. The only thing is you are identifying toeside as switch, which will confuse a lot of newbies.

Switch stance is changing your forward foot from goofy to regular or vice versa NOT riding toeside.

Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.. misnamung tricks or terms in wake kite wing or foil.

Would you say it's going to be easier trying to jibes on a starboard X foil board that's used for wind and wing foiling 145 ltr 10.5kg board, and getting the Starboard wing 6.3 board that's 8.5kg weight and 115ltr, my own weight is 97kg. Thanks

I almost didn't watch this video because I'm on a beginner foil board, not a SUP....but it was terrific! Great instruction, good visuals, particularly appreciated the switch stance tips. Thanks!

Howdy from Texas! I've watched quite a few gybe lesson videos and this one is tops! The instructions are clear and the example clips are very good. Time to go practice on the lawn (low wind today). lol

I missed the part about switching with footstraps, but how could that be so different, right? I hit about a third of my gybes while foiling, because I'm heavy and use the smallest possible sail. So I come down a lot. Thanks for the tips. Phenomenal video.

Great video, I have struggled with gybes continually falling on the inside, I enter with speed but can't seem to work out why I fail so many. I did move forward from a 2000cmsq to a 1450, do you think I should go back to the bigger foil? Thanks in advance

Very well explained and illustrated. Thanks a lot :-) You should add this 3rd video from your wing series to your respective playlist on wings and foils. I did not find it there yet

Best video out there. Congratulations. Your Wing review last year was excellent. Now an education series that is really well organized, shot, and edited.

I've been trying my gybes but the best I've managed is 3/4 on foil and then taxi for the remainder. It feels like juggling as it looks easy once you master it, but getting to that point is a process. Practice has to be the key, as you stated. I'm just hoping it 'clicks' like it did for the foiling part.

I'm not sure if you've done a video like this already Reuben, but any thought to covering the pros and cons of upgrading equipment once you get comfortable with the basics (gybes and tacks, etc.)? My current set up is definitely geared towards learning (floatier board and low aspect foil), but seems like the more experienced you are, everything shrinks. Having had the wind die on me a few times, I dread to think if I was stuck with a 30-40L board, however. What do you enjoy riding most? (conditions permitting)

Thanks and cheers!
