'Tis the season for giving--with intention!

In this video I'm sharing how my family is celebrating Christmas. We're taking it back to our roots from many years ago and I'm excited. There's a lot of waste that is created during this time and I feel like the best gift I can give my kids is a world to live in so we're attempting to do our part.

How do you all celebrate?

We also limit the gift buying. My kids are young adults. This year I am focusing on giving them books (I try to get them 2nd hand). I agree that over consumption is creating a nightmare for the world to clean up. I also love making things for people. I made some really fun felt "Christmas Sweater" ornaments this year and it was so much fun.

I like that concept. I agree that it takes off pressure. I loooove your oldest daughter’s list. TFS.

I love the four categories, but even more than that I love to give/be given experiences like museum memberships, gift cards for classes or lessons, or movie tickets. I love a consumable gift. One of the things my husband and I give to the family every year is a really nice holiday meal, and they give us quality time. Were we going to cook a 12-lb prime rib anyway? Yes. Does it taste better when people I love are raving about it? Also yes.

I'm the baker in the family. So my gift to my family is the sugar cookies they decorate on Christmas eve and the alcohol free fruit cake they enjoy on Christmas day.

My big thing is sending out Christmas cards. Then I focus on the little ones. 🙃. I lean more towards books and needs and focus on the spiritual journey of the season.

My kids are 10 and 4, very much into toys as gifts. Here we have spreadsheets on a Google Drive and I've send the links to friends and family so everyone can see what's asked and reserve a gift.

My son's list is enormous so he had to choose a few items he really wanted and I marked them so people know what to prioritize. I also discussed boundaries with him (financial, logistical or ethical, he's old enough to understand why I won't buy anything Harry Potter themed or too big for our flat).

My daughter on the other hand asked for very little specific items (and the list is for her birthday presents too) so I add a few more general ideas (anything Paw Patrol, anything unicorn themed, ...) to fill up.

We do a similar thing, with those four, plus something to make, something to play, something for Santa to bring in his sleigh (that last is more for me, since our "baby" is 11!).

Definitely makes it easier to shop and plan with a bit of a guideline for categories!

I’m enjoying your content, thanks for sharing. I appreciate your journey to limit consumption.
I feel your frustration on sewing for your kids. I sewed a pleated skirt for my then high school daughter who had picked out the pattern and the fabric. After realizing that the pattern was way too small, m and spending hours mathing it up only to have her put it on and say, I don’t like it. Similar story with another skirt with a bunch of time consuming godets. 😭

I like the top you’re wearing. I have small grands, so this year I’m leaning more toward education and clothes, rather than toys.

This year is about an experience as opposed to a gift.

I come from a large family, so the adults don’t give each other gifts….im trying to cut down on consumption, so if someone really wants to do something, I give them a list of charities to donate to. My great-niece and great-nephew are still very young and love getting gifts. However, there are so many adults buying for them, that I give the amount I would spend on gifts to their college fund. I also do the same for my nephew who just started college, as do his other aunts. All the parents are very appreciative of those of us who do this instead of buying more stuff that the kids don’t really need….
