You could and this is actually how I did mange access for many years but as mentioned on the video and blog post one of the primary goals is to reduce devices on standby; only the router is powered 24/7! Furthermore, when a PC has WOL enabled it actually uses more power in standby than when disabled as it needs to keep the NIC powered up, see wikipedia Wake-on-LAN for details.

Not to mention the ease of just getting your phone out and simply pressing a button and done!

Just a thought. Surely you could start the server with wake on lan (if compatible) and shutdown (if running windows) with the command shutdown/i
