The Haunting (1963), The Omen (1976), The Exorcist (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), The Night Stalker (1972), The Fly (1986), The Blob (1988), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), and Tales from the Hood (1995) are all other examples of films that have aged beautifully and still have the power to scare.

I think that the mechanical shark's unreliability was a disguised blessing for Jaws. Not seeing the shark throughout the majority of the movie builds the suspense to a utterly chilling level.

I'd suggest the original Omen movie holds up surprisingly well. Well acted, outstanding soundtrack and an iconic ending...great horror movie.

‘Alien’, one of the best science fiction/horror pictures ever made.

The sound of the werewolf howling in the subway tunnel in American werewolf in London is one of the most bone chilling sounds in movie history imo.

Will never tire of watching American Werewolf - love it!

Rosemary’s Baby(1968) is a masterclass in good psychological horror and it’s a masterpiece that still doesn’t disappoint

I would say the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974 holds up very well. It's not gory and all of the scares are left up to your imagination.

When a Stranger Calls(1979) still scares the crap out of me no matter how many times I have seen it! The phone calls then to find they were calling from inside the house, the haunting music…scary but love it!

Although I agree, I also can't imagine someone born in the 2000's understanding how pivotal the movie Psycho was to film making as a whole back in the day compared to today where nearly every movie simply is a remake.

George A. Romero’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ is still one of my top 10 most favorite zombie movies.

I would like to nominate, even if just for an honorable mention, The Exorcist. There hasn't been a better demon/exorcism movie since...and I don't think there ever will be. Not only is it one of the best horror movies ever, it's still cited as one of the scariest of all time.

Jaws is the best example of how a horror movie does not have to be about the supernatural to be scary.
Midsommar scared me the same way. No monsters, very few effects-just a dangerous cult disguised as a peaceful village.

After more than 40 years, that werewolf transformation is still the best of all times!

Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Fright Night (1985) was an awesome horror movie to watch too. I was watching that movie 10 years or so after I watched at a movie theater, and I was like "What, that Fright Night actress was the one who played Marcy D'Arcy in "Married with Children?" 😱 Anyway, Return of the Living Dead II (1988) was an awesome horror movie to watch as well. 🤣

The Shining is definitely number one! Poor Shelley was not prepared at all for Jack's breaking into the bathroom, so her screams were genuine. Amazing movie!
