If you set aside the pollutants and such, efficiency simply makes economic sense.
If you drive a car that makes 10mpg you're going to pay 3 times as much as someone that drives a car that makes 30mpg.
Unless you're actually using a super duty hauling vehicle specifically to haul heavy things, that's just unreasonable, you're going to waste your own money very quickly.
I would guess it's even more cost effective for electrics perhaps, or can be, haven't bothered to do the math on that myself yet.
