Staying in the target language as a Spanish teacher at the high school level can be harder than it sounds. Especially as a first year teacher, we need examples to really grasp how to use comprehensible input in the world language classroom. Look no further! Here is a tutorial for teaching Spanish with comprehensible input (CI) that guides you through some strategies I use every day to teach a foreign language without using English. Enjoy!

Kroger is a supermarket. Almacen means warehouse. Two different things.

Oh this just encouraged me as a English speaking Mom. My son is currently learning Spanish in 2nd grade (full immersion). Your teaching style would be perfect for him. He can read Spanish well but struggle with comprehension and some writing. Came across your video while looking for ways to learn myself and ways to help him. You’re and amazing teacher, keep it up. Wish you were teaching at his school.

This was a fantastic example of CI and circling! As someone who just took some Spanish in high school (and then said never again, went on to learn another language instead) I actually got something from it :)

Love it ! One thing, we need to make an effot pronouncing those "r's" correctly and as close to native pronunciation as we can. I have americanized my pronunciation and Im trying to get my native accent back. I have noticed students do not understand when you pronounce the words correctly but when you change your accent a little bit to american accent they understand much better and it should not be. We want them to understtand native speakers.

This was a great example of CI. I am going to be a first year teacher soon, so I thank you so much for this. I am inspired by you. Thank you! 😀

Love your style of teaching please make more videos. This is the first video I have ever watched and actually learned like 20 words at one time

I feel you're the best person to ask. I know so much of Spanish, French and Italian. I can read anything in front of me. The natives understand my every word. My trouble is understanding the natives talk in films and etc. I use the subtitles in THEIR languages, never English. It all makes sense when the subtitles are on. They correspond to the sound of the words fully. When I remove subtitles, it becomes a blur again. I've had this problem for years. Except face to face. The natives adjust their speech so that I get it. I'm from Britain and the natives say that despite my half English/half Spanish accent, they totally understand me.

Es claro que se esfuerce mucho pa asegurarse de llevar tu mensaje a sus alumnos. Desafortunadamente, a muchos maestros (como los míos) realmente no les importaba nuestro exito. Al menos, agradezco todo su esfuerzo (y espero que sus almunos lo agradezcan tb).

This is awesome! I primarily teach elementary kids. I want to try to use more of low prep CI on my whiteboard. Creating highly visual lessons takes so much time.

I just used (& cited!) your video for one of my assignments toward my teaching credential. Love your teaching style! I want to stay in the target language as much as possible when I teach Spanish too. Thanks for the videos!

Do you teach a Spanish 101 course on YouTube? If not, you should.

I would ask: "Conoces Aldi/ Kroger?" Saber is for knowing information or knowing how to do something.

I love the strategy of staying on the TL but Kroger, Aldi, etc. are definitely not examples of almacenes. You should have used: súper, supermercado, mercado.

Kroger y Aldi son Super mercados, no almacénes! NY & Co., Foot Locker, Forever 21, etc., son almacénes. I like your facial expressions.
