It's pretty wild when a sailboat surfs down the back side of a wave and exceeds its designed hull speed and starts to plane up and wiggle side to side! I've only done it once, but I'll never forget it.

I rode a few big waves in a 37ft power boat. Speed before being carried was 19kts. Reached 24 surfing the waves.

That's the worst. As a Kid, I built a 7-foot boat and launched it from the beach. You had to messure your timing. Between swells and when coming in, you always watch your back and run perpendicular to the patterns. Only got swamped once.😂❤

Well Done Captain.

I'd probably have closed that hatch forward, but it's not a big deal.

Same here... Entering Naples Florida Bay I surfed through wave after wave in a fairly narrow pass.. ( a severe squall had just passed) and it was very intense!... Believe me I know the feeling 😊

If you ever get on racing boat, you’ll realize that one can sail, not using power, and ride waves for a long long way. Of course, different kind of boat different kind of sailing.

I would suggest closing all hatches and companionway prior to attempting ANY type of possibly rough passages. And yes, I learned the hard way.

The problem with most sailing boats is the rudder is not designed properly. The mighty Nordica never struggles.
