Lab researchers are now developing the implantable system for a third-generation artificial retina as part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project to produce an "retinal prosthesis" that could restore vision to millions of people suffering from eye diseases.

R&D 100 Magazine recently announced that the second generation artificial retina, Argus II, has been selected for a 2009 R&D 100 award.

And Popular Mechanics named it a winner of the magazine's 2010 Breakthrough Award.
