You can notice that between the Tough Break and Meat your Match updates came up, something fishy was starting to build up deep in the game, and that is lack of creativity from the devs.

Tough Break was the fourth major update in a row where they only do a rebalance of weapons, fix the hammer tool and performance improvements (they also added contracts but since is cosmetic the rewards they gave it was meh when it comes to gameplay itself) while the community was becoming the "brain" in making new things like community maps and hats, taunts, you name it.

Meat your Match was almost the same, they made competitive mode as a way to separate the premium players from F2P's, with the purpose of having a more serious gameplay but sadly it got the same fate as arena mode and it's basicaly dead when it comes to find a match. If there isn't any sort of reward for playing it or winning a match, what's the point of playing it? Badges can only be seen in that mode, same thing on casual and no one cares about it. This mode could have been improved in a lot of ways, like drops appear twice as fast or drop weapons/free cosmetics from winning. Even getting rare stuff at ranking up (of course not exclusive weapons because that's unfair in any game, but exclusive reskins could be interesting).

Then the Jungle Inferno update was brought to us with new community maps, the last new weapons and a rebalance that 75% of the community didn't like because of nerfs and destroying the originality of certain weapons as well, new players picking pyro trying to complete the contracts (I only found around 2-3 heavys up to this day where they were doing the second banana contract).

Now the game it's surviving because of the constant gameplays from the fans but the bots flooding the servers whenever they want makes it difficult match after match, they've got more persistent everyday and nowadays it's something that you see on a daily basis and simply look at them as the most annoying thing in the game: kick, play, kick again, get kicked because of successful bot kick, join new server, repeat. Later you'd start doubting if it's worth keep trying. Your friends and the community will they you to keep playing it. Retired players might say it's a waste of time. But that depends on you on you who you'll listen to.

People get sad/angry at Valve/Gaben about why they don't give us an actual update. We tried asking them, letting bots raid the causal servers, make memes that get popular enough to reach millions of views, but they don't even flinch at it. Sure, you might say, it's a better option to go play community servers where we get lots of new content like VSH/FF2/BVB, TF2ware, Deathrun, Prophunt, Slenderfortress and RPGfortress. I love those modes, don't get me wrong, but wasn't this game about 2 brothers arguing about the terrains the other owns from their father and sending mercenaries to fight and proclaim those terrains?

Someday, we'll receive an official major update, it might happen in the next Scream Fortress XIII or maybe a new Smissmass (which recycled the idea of adding for a limited time new Christmas related maps) but who knows, companies are hard to understand, and so are its games.
