I was a big fan of a show called the 4400 and they did a reboot. The reboot was all about race and trans situations. I was like, what does this have to do with people disappearing from all sorts of time lines and coming back with powers.

To be honest, this show has nothing to do, with Cthulhu Mythology or some Lovecraftian horror stories. Yes, there are some monsters from Lovecraft horror stories, but the story focus less on the horror of unknown and eldritch creatures. The story should talk more about eldritch creatures, ancient civilization, and even the eldritch gods instead of racism. To me, this is not a Lovecraftian horror show.

Hands down one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Very much enjoyed. Extremely sad to see it go 🤦‍♂️

It also was cancelled due to them simply not liking the ideas brought to the table for season 2. Which may fall in line with your reasons with budgeting. Also, rumors were it was a toxic work environment 😬

Love craft country was critically lauded with 18 Emmy nominations.
It had huge ratings that tapered off towards the end of the shows run.
Let's compare apples to apples.
Lovecraft country cost $150 million dollars to produce and got one season even thought it was a trending topic every Sunday.
Raised by wolves on the same network cost $200 million dollars to produce never found an audience and got 2 seasons.
Something doesn't add up in your analysis.

I don't care what anyone says, this show was great.

I think they did the right thing in cancelling it. Lets be honest - it was the most racist show of the last 30 years or so. If you are against racism you have to be against ALL kinds of racism. This show was full of anti-white racism and even anti-semitism of the worst form.

I just finished it and thought it rocked! Glad it had a good roundup finale if we never get another season ...

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one man. I'm black and a DIE HARD fan of Lovecraft lore. Yes he was a super racist but I still am a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos. When I heard this was coming out, I was excited but had never read the books. As I watched the first few episodes, I was digging it but the racist overtones of the world turned me off so much. I wanted to see more of the lore but there was just TOO MUCH focus on the racism aspects, which is understandable but it just couldn't hold my interest as a Cthulhu mythos fan or horror fan.

I think the show was pretty good for what it was but it was so damn devisive in it's story that I just was turned off by it. But it is what it is. There has to be balance of social commentary and STORY rather than SOCIAL COMMENTARY and story. Too much of that focus on social issues first and story second in the recent productions in the past 10 years has really taken the wind out of the room of entertainment a bit.

Does it get better after episode 1? Asking to see if it's worth investing time on it. The dialogue felt/sounded very unnatural and the pacinng felt all over the place. Want to know if it gets better

White folks make these kind of movies to remind us how good they had it..I wouldn't want to be an actress or actor to play these roles...I can't imagine living a life during that time.

I remember I first saw Lovecraft Country on HBO Max back in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and I thought that show was very interesting, unique, creative, and it definitely shows that the times in the 1950s were terrible similar to The Umbrella Academy season 2 shows the times in 1960s were terrible. Thank god I was born 1990. Unfortunately much like the Hannibal tv series, Lovecraft Country sadly never really have the same success and popularity like Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon, Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, American Horror Story, The Mandalorian, The Boys and its spin-off Gen V, Squid Game, Wednesday, and The Last of Us. What even more sad and disappointing to me is that since Lovecraft Country was cancelled, it unfortunately will never have a haunted house maze attraction at Universal’s Halloween Horror Night or even Warner Bros Studio Tours Hollywood because I remember Warner Bros Studio Tours has once did their own Halloween event back in 2018. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix was also cancelled and never had a chance to have its own haunted house maze attraction. At least other popular horror tv series like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Ash vs Evil Dead, Stranger Things, the last two segments of Creepshow (though the first three segments were based on the first movie), miniseries The Haunting of Hill House and Chucky have their own haunted house maze attraction at Universal’s Halloween Horror Night. Not counting The Last of Us because even though HBO made a tv series based on the video game, the Halloween maze itself was also based on the video game.

I love the Lovecraft country. They should have a part 2. Bring Jonathan Majors back. Michael K. Williams pass away.

I agree with much of what he said, but I think the underlying reason for the success or failure of shows these days in general is directly proportionate to how much allegory is in them and how much of an 'in your face' way they are presented to the audience. I think people are getting really tired of allegory, and particularly political allegory from questionably qualified writing and directing teams, and in the case with Lovecraft, the focus in any show should definitely revolve around the supernatural horror aspect of Lovecraft's works where the ethnic groups of the human characters and how they relate to each other in the show become more of a background thing as would be natural when the prime focus is on the much more important supernatural horror and the unknown vastness of the universe elements, fears and terrors shared by all humans indiscriminately from time immemorial as Lovecraft desired it to be.

Lovecraft's conscious and subconscious beliefs on race, ethnic groups, nationalities and the like, and how they influenced his stories was not intended to be allegorical, but rather they served as the basis to help frighten the reader and get the reader interested in the stories with concepts they could relate to (in the 1920s and 30s anyway), because otherwise his stories would just be essays on nebulousness that only a few moonstruck types would have any real interest in.

Even today people fear the unknown, and that is reflected in their fear or at least their nervousness when confronted with other ethnic groups, races, nationalities and particularly when encountering certain conditions that they are not completely familiar with, and such could and probably should still form an element in modern fear literature, even though the far more 'alien' forces seeping out of the vastness of the universe would and should still serve as the core horror element of these types of horror stories.

So beginning with humans and their natural fear of each other and culminating in humans and their natural fear of the greater universal unknowns, along with no conscious focus on allegory, and regardless of ethnic group or race, would be the most effective way of presenting Lovecraft's works for any reason imo. If the intent is to change peoples minds and control the way they think in a more positive way, I think Lovecraft's stories already have that 'positive' effect built in them naturally, and really can't be 'improved' upon. The fear of the unknown = bad?, o.k. it's already built in that way in the original stories, and this reality is portrayed as just another human racial defect, perhaps derived from racial memories (if you believe in that type of thing), one defect out of many. The way humans see each other when they are not familiar with each other produces fear - again the fear of the unknown = bad, and again already suggested in that negative way in the stories non-allegorically.

Nobody needed your apologea for the African-American centred direction of this marvellous, thoughtful production. There are enough white critics out there, so you can put down your massa work and do something more useful with your time.

I very much enjoyed "Lovecraft Country" my first watch. The premise, the story, the production (that $150mil was APPARENT) but my opinion made a quick 180 after that sh!t ending. Specifically that little allagory about white people, and magic, and the young black youth strangling the evil white oppressor to death... it didn't really make me excited for a season 2, that's for damn sure 🤷‍♂️

Edit: I keep forgetting using a sentence break on here "- -" crosses out said sentence...
