He got away with it. He could pull the plug by rights. And honestly, rightfully so.

The fact that Crawford has 5 defense attorneys surrounding him for the second trial when he represented himself in the first one speaks volumes about the gravity of the situation.

One of those rare courtroom dramas where you supposed to root for the prosecutor.

He didn't pull the plug because he was scared the wife would be a witness. He pulled it because he enjoyed killing her and that no-one could stop him. He wanted to gloat with that power. He told Beachum that Beachum's weakness was that he was a winner, but it was actually his own weakness. Also he wasn't portrayed as some legal genius in the movie, he just had a plan that he had engineered. Also the new case is a completely new case, it doesn't matter that he got acquitted for the lesser charge before, the new case has motive, murder weapon, confession, and pulling the plug (she died of injuries he inflicted).

In the first trial, no lawyer. Ending scene, surrounded by lawyers

Really was an INGENIOUS scheme by Crawford. Brilliantly devious. He just missed that one little detail.

So forget the double jeopardy stuff, my question is this: yes Beechum can match the bullet to Nunally’s gun- that still doesn’t prove that Crawford shot her. His gun is still unfired.

Yes, great writing. Have the main villain be brilliant the entire film but then overlook the easiest and most important detail. The ending destroyed the film.

It's a bit of a paradox as I see it. He was acquitted of shooting her at all in the first trial. As a result, pulling the plug on her at the end cannot be linked to anything relative to the first trial as he is protected under "double jeopardy"; in fact, as far as I know, the new jury could not be told ANYTHING relating to the first trial. I'm not a lawyer, but I think I am on firm ground here. Can anyone involved in criminal law corroborate this?

Never have I wanted a killer to go free more than this.

Here's the problem. Crawford goes on trial for attempted murder and gets off because of lack of evidence. So he's beaten the charge. Then he has the wife's life support switched off, but there was no need to do that because he's trying to stop her from ever waking up and identifying him and he doesn't need to worry about that because he's already been charged and got away with that crime. Even if she work up and was able to ID him, they wouldn't be able to arrest him again because it would be for the same crime and you can't be charged with the same crime twice.

I think a genius that clearly studied the shit out of the situation would know that attempted murder is a separate crime from murder and that double jeaporady would not be in play, furthermore, he would know NEVER to confess to any portion of the crime anyway because there is ALWAYS a way for the court to fuck your ass up if they want to. good movie, stupid plot twist at the end. even a first year law student would know better.
