Calibration does not need to be done every time. There are several slots to save both the frequency range you intend to use and also the calibration for that frequency.

I saved calibrations for three radio bands, plus one more for most of the range of the device.

If you are not using presets, though, then yes, you need to calibrate every time.

Calibration works by setting a number of points - in my case, 101 - and calibrating across the selected range. A smaller range means more precision.
