Earth, wind, fire and water are the 4th level of creation after trinity, duality and singularity. They teach you some of the basics of how the universe works aka "nature". This is a very ancient Chinese secret that goes far beyond kung fu but is still the key to many forms of kung fu. This also works for pretty much all of our interactions with the physical world. You could say that this understanding of "becoming" is the the very essence of kung fu its self. When he says "put down your burden" and then has a striking revelation, he learned the first step in truly controlling energy and that is "relaxation" or "letting go". You can't control energy with force, its more like you are guiding it. This is represented in the yin yang. It is the give and take of balance.
